Before recycling a malfunctioning phone, laptop, printer, refrigerator, washing machine, or air conditioner, identify its exact model and check warranty status and the manufacturer’s repair information. India’s Right to Repair India portal is a useful starting point for finding participating brands, service options, and repair information—but it does not guarantee a guide, spare part, or nearby repairer for every product. If repair is not practical, use a current brand or formal collection route rather than putting electronics or batteries in ordinary waste.
Start with the exact model and fault
Write down the brand, model number, approximate age, symptoms, and any error message. Note whether the product is still covered by a warranty or service plan. If a battery is swollen, damaged, or behaving unusually, do not treat the item as an ordinary do-it-yourself repair; contact the manufacturer or a qualified service or collection channel.
Do not open a device before checking the manufacturer’s instructions and warranty terms. Repair steps and risks vary by model and fault, and there is no single safe disassembly method for all electronics.
Find official repair information in India
Search the Right to Repair India portal
The Department of Consumer Affairs’ sectors page lists mobiles, tablets, laptops, batteries, printers, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. Search the portal by product or company to see what information and service links are available. The portal describes access to repair and maintenance information, warranty and post-sales support, authorized service-provider listings, and genuine-spare information or pricing where available; coverage varies by brand and product.

A 2024 Department of Consumer Affairs workshop release described examples of portal-linked manuals or repair videos, spare-part price and warranty information, service-centre details, and recognized third-party repairers. These are examples of available information, not a promise that every listing or detail exists for your model: PIB’s National Workshop on Right to Repair in Mobile and Electronics Sector, 29 August 2024.
If your product or brand is not listed
Use the manufacturer’s own support channel and ask whether the repairer is authorized, which part will be installed, and what warranty applies to the repair. The portal FAQ explains the portal’s consumer-information role; its presence does not mean every brand or local provider is covered.

Compare repair options before authorizing work
Where feasible, obtain two quotes and compare the same details. Do not assume that an authorized or independent repair is automatically cheaper, faster, or better; check the terms for the actual job.
- Total quoted cost: Ask whether diagnosis, labour, parts, and applicable taxes are included, and whether a diagnostic fee is payable if you decline the repair.
- Part identity and availability: Ask whether the part is genuine or otherwise, and have its identity and price stated clearly. Confirm that it is available for your exact model.
- Repair time: Request an estimated turnaround and ask whether it depends on ordering a part.
- Repair warranty: Ask what warranty covers the work and replacement part, and get the terms in writing.
- Existing coverage: Check whether the proposed repair affects any remaining device warranty or service-plan coverage.
- Provider credentials: Confirm whether the provider is authorized or recognized by the brand, and verify that claim with the manufacturer if it matters to your decision.
These checks help make quotes comparable, but India’s official sources do not establish a universal repair-price formula or a fixed cost threshold at which replacing a device is better.

Decide whether to repair, reuse, or recycle
Repair is more attractive when the fault is clearly diagnosed, the required part is available, the total quote is acceptable to you, and the repair has clear warranty terms. Replacement may make more sense if a repairer cannot source the part, the fault remains uncertain, or the quoted expense and expected usefulness do not suit your needs. There is no government-set percentage or price rule that determines the right choice for every device.
If a product still works but is no longer useful to you, consider whether it can be reused or refurbished through an appropriate channel instead of treating it as waste. For an item that cannot reasonably be repaired or reused, ask the manufacturer, brand service channel, or local authority about current collection arrangements before handing it over.

Use formal e-waste and battery routes
India’s E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 were notified in November 2022 and took effect on 1 April 2023. They establish an extended producer responsibility (EPR) system, with relevant producers, manufacturers, refurbishers, and recyclers required to register through the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) system. See the Ministry of Environment’s parliamentary reply, 13 February 2025, and the CPCB E-Waste Management System.
The CPCB system is an EPR portal, not proof of a nationwide household drop-off service or of a particular local facility’s current operation. Confirm that a collection point accepts your item and check its current status before travelling or handing anything over.

Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 cover battery types including portable batteries. The government states that the EPR framework prohibits disposal of waste batteries in landfill. Use the CPCB EPR Battery Portal for battery-specific guidance and ask the brand or service provider how to handle a damaged battery. Do not put a waste battery in ordinary household rubbish.
What the current policy snapshots do—and do not—show
A PIB release dated 3 May 2025 said more than 65 companies had onboarded to the Right to Repair India portal across four sectors. The repairability-index framework report discussed there applies to smartphones and tablets. This is a dated participation snapshot, not a live count or evidence that every product category has the same repairability information: PIB, Report for Framework on Repairability Index submitted.
For scale, CPCB figures reported by PIB were 1,254,286.55 tonnes of e-waste in FY 2023–24 and 1,397,955.59 tonnes in FY 2024–25. These are financial-year figures attributed to CPCB, not estimates of the amount accepted at any specific collection point: PIB, 2025.
NITI Aayog’s 2026 report counted 509 registered e-waste entities—381 recyclers and 128 refurbishers—and 43 lithium-ion battery recyclers as of 1 November 2025. Registration counts do not establish that each entity is operating now or accessible to households: NITI Aayog, Advancing Circular Economy of Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment and Lithium-Ion Batteries in India.
