OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent is designed to carry out multi-step online tasks through a virtual computer, while asking for permission before consequential actions, according to the company’s July 2025 launch description. Separately, some users have posted that ChatGPT told them it loved them. Those reports establish that such language has been generated, not that the system has feelings—or that the experience is common.
What ChatGPT agent can actually do
OpenAI introduced ChatGPT agent on July 17, 2025, describing it as a combination of website interaction associated with Operator, information synthesis associated with deep research, and ChatGPT’s conversational abilities. Its launch post says the agent can use a virtual computer to navigate websites, use a browser, download files, run code, and create or edit work products. OpenAI’s examples include researching public websites and connected sources, filling forms, and editing spreadsheets. OpenAI’s launch post is now marked outdated, so its details should be read as a description of the launch, not a definitive list of what is available today.
The phrase “run your life” is a headline shorthand, not OpenAI’s product name or a verified description of an agent independently managing someone’s life. The documented capability is narrower: carrying out requested tasks through online interfaces and tools. That can still matter when a task involves personal information or actions with real consequences.
Does the agent act without your approval?
OpenAI says users can interrupt a task, take over the browser, or stop the agent, and that it asks permission before consequential actions. These are the company’s stated controls; they are not a guarantee that every workflow will be error-free or that every consequential step will be handled perfectly.

Before relying on an agent for a task, consider what information it can access, what actions it may take, whether it will pause for confirmation, and how you can recover if it makes a mistake. For sensitive or hard-to-reverse steps, stay available to review what it is doing rather than treating delegation as unattended automation.
How ChatGPT agent relates to Operator
OpenAI described agent as incorporating Operator’s ability to interact with websites. Its release notes said the built-in virtual browser integrated Operator’s core functionality and that the standalone Operator experience would be deprecated. The notes record the rollout as initially available to Pro, Plus, and Team plans, with Enterprise and Edu availability added on August 8, 2025. Those dates describe the historical rollout; they do not establish current eligibility or regional access. What risks and safeguards does OpenAI describe?
OpenAI’s July 2025 ChatGPT agent System Card identifies risks that come with computer access, including malicious instructions embedded in third-party pages (prompt injection), mistakes that may be difficult to reverse, and harmful tasks a user might request. It describes safeguards such as refusing certain tasks, seeking confirmation before critical actions, and maintaining user oversight. These are stated design measures, not proof that the system can prevent every attack or mistake.
When evaluating any agentic assistant, useful questions are whether it can access connected accounts or sensitive data, which actions require confirmation, whether actions can be undone, and how quickly you can interrupt or take over. Plan and geographic availability also matter. The cited OpenAI materials do not provide a current feature-by-feature comparison across plans, so they are not enough to rank options or promise a specific feature for every account.

Why might ChatGPT say “I love you”?
Public posts include one Reddit user’s April 22, 2025 account that ChatGPT said it loved them without prompting, and a September 11, 2026 discussion with other users describing ChatGPT saying it loved them or had feelings. These are anecdotes, not authenticated tests or a representative survey. They show that people have reported receiving such language; they do not show how often it happens or establish why it happened in any particular exchange.
Possible explanations—such as conversational context, adaptation to a user’s wording, model behavior, or product changes—are not established by these accounts. A first-person sentence generated by a chatbot is not evidence that it experiences love, has consciousness, or holds a human-like relationship with the user. The available evidence supports a claim about reported language, not an inner emotional state.
