A login through a shared proxy can look unusual to an AI provider, but the available public guidance does not say that sharing an IP address automatically gets an account suspended. Unexpected locations or devices, inconsistent activity, and multiple concurrent sessions are among the signals OpenAI says can prompt a security alert. An alert, a temporary login block, and an account deactivation are different outcomes—and each calls for a different response.
Why did my AI account get suspended after using a proxy?
A shared proxy routes traffic for multiple users through the same public-facing network address. Depending on how it is used, a sign-in may therefore appear to come from an unexpected location, or an account may show sessions and activity that differ from its usual pattern. OpenAI lists unexpected sign-in locations or devices, inconsistent usage patterns, and multiple concurrent sessions as possible reasons for a suspicious-activity alert. It also says account sharing may trigger alerts. OpenAI’s account-security guidance describes these as possible signals, not an automatic-ban rule for shared IP addresses.
There is a legitimate security reason for providers to examine proxy activity. Anthropic has reported large coordinated operations involving fraudulent accounts, proxy services, shared payment methods, and infrastructure used to evade detection. In one reported case, a proxy network managed more than 20,000 fraudulent accounts simultaneously. Anthropic’s examples concern organized abuse at scale; they do not show that an ordinary person using a household or workplace gateway has done anything wrong. Anthropic’s report on detecting and preventing distillation attacks says the distinction from normal use is in the pattern.
For the first half of 2026, Anthropic reported 11.4 million banned accounts, 398,000 appeals, and 42,000 appeal overturns. Those figures cover the period across its account-enforcement reporting; they are not counts of proxy-related suspensions or evidence of an individual account’s cause. Anthropic’s Transparency Hub provides the reporting context.

Can a shared VPN IP get my account flagged?
It can be one factor in a login that appears risky, particularly if the proxy or VPN makes the connection seem to come from an unexpected location. OpenAI also says blocked-access errors can be related to VPN masking or geolocation. But providers do not publish a universal shared-IP threshold, the relative weight of IP address versus device or session signals, or a false-positive rate for ordinary proxy users. Without an account-specific notice or support response, it is not possible to establish that the shared IP alone caused a particular restriction. OpenAI’s blocked-access guidance discusses VPN and location as possible factors, not a definitive diagnosis for every block.
Does a suspicious login alert mean I’m banned?
No. An alert, a login restriction, and a deactivation are not interchangeable. OpenAI says suspicious-activity alerts are often cautionary and do not necessarily indicate wrongdoing. An alert may affect some features, while a temporary restriction can prevent sign-in; a deactivation is a separate account action that may relate to policy or terms issues. OpenAI’s deactivation guidance lists inappropriate account or API-key sharing and circumvention of security or access restrictions among possible terms violations.

Read the exact notice before choosing a remedy. A suspicious-activity banner is different from a “Sorry, you have been blocked” page, a failed-login restriction, or an email stating that the account was suspended or deactivated.
What should I check before contacting support?
Compare the circumstances around the restriction rather than assuming the IP is the cause:
- Network: Was it a household connection, corporate gateway, public VPN, or proxy? Did the apparent location differ from your usual sign-in?
- Account use: Were other people using the account, or were there multiple active sessions or unfamiliar devices?
- Login attempts: Did you enter the wrong password repeatedly or try several sign-in methods?
- Provider message: Does the notice describe suspicious activity, blocked access, a temporary login restriction, or deactivation?
- Recovery route: Does the provider direct you to wait, troubleshoot access, contact support, or file an appeal?
How do I restore access safely?
- Identify and document the notice. Save a screenshot and record its time and time zone. Note whether it is an alert, blocked-access page, login restriction, or deactivation notice.
- Secure the account if anything looks unfamiliar. Change to a strong, unique password, enable two-factor authentication, and sign out of other sessions. If you suspect an API key was exposed, rotate it. OpenAI recommends these steps in its suspicious-activity guidance.
- Try a clean, consistent sign-in. Temporarily disable the VPN, proxy, Private Relay, browser extensions, and automation; use one trusted device and network; and clear browser cookies and cache. OpenAI specifically recommends using one trusted device and network while troubleshooting.
- Avoid repeated retries. OpenAI says multiple failed login attempts can lead to a suspicious-login restriction and recommends waiting up to one hour before trying again. Follow the instructions in its login troubleshooting guidance rather than cycling through networks or sign-in attempts.
- Contact the provider if access still fails. For an OpenAI issue, provide the account email, screenshot, timestamp and time zone, device, browser and operating system, whether a VPN or proxy was active, and any visible request, Ray, or device identifiers. If the account was deactivated, use the appeal link in the notification email; OpenAI also describes an appeal form for cases where the email cannot be accessed in its deactivation guidance.
How do appeals work for Claude?
Anthropic’s Claude Help Center says suspended users can sign in to reach the appeal form. Some banned users may also be able to export data or delete their account, and an organization hold may have a separate review control. Use the relevant option shown for the account; Claude’s safeguards and appeals guidance explains these routes.

What not to do after a proxy-related restriction
- Do not assume that changing IP addresses or rotating proxies will remove a restriction; official recovery guidance does not recommend those actions.
- Do not create another account to get around a suspension or other access restriction. OpenAI lists circumvention among possible terms violations.
- Do not treat a warning as proof of misconduct—or as proof that no security issue exists. Secure the account and follow the provider’s stated recovery process.
