Claude Code’s usage telemetry is not the same as the content it sends to the model. Anthropic says Statsig operational metrics do not include code or file paths, while prompts and model outputs are transmitted to the model service. For direct Anthropic API use, nonessential telemetry is enabled by default and can be disabled; it is off by default for Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI. CI security depends separately on the credentials, workflow triggers, permissions, and isolation you configure.
What “usage tracking” does—and does not—mean
Claude Code communicates with model services over the network to process prompts and return model outputs. Anthropic says that this traffic uses TLS and is not encrypted at rest. Separately, the vendor describes Statsig telemetry as operational metrics, including latency, reliability, and usage patterns, and says: “This logging does not include any code or file paths.” See Anthropic’s Claude Code data usage documentation.
That distinction matters: telemetry opt-outs do not mean Claude Code stops sending prompts and outputs required for model processing. Nor does Anthropic’s description of Statsig establish what a particular organization’s proxy, cloud provider, gateway, or CI system logs. The documentation is the vendor’s account of product behavior, not an independent audit of an installation.
Which data might be retained, and for how long?
- Local sessions: Anthropic says local clients may keep sessions for up to 30 days so work can be resumed; behavior is configurable.
- Feedback: Feedback transcripts are retained for 30 days and used to debug related issues and improve Claude Code, not to train generative models, according to Anthropic.
- Bug reports: The
/bugcommand sends Anthropic a copy of the full conversation history, including code. Disable it if that data-sharing path is not acceptable. - Organization API retention: Anthropic says a zero-data-retention organization API key prevents server-side retention of chat transcripts. This does not by itself establish local storage or retention practices elsewhere in your request path.
An organization can explicitly opt into Anthropic’s Developer Partner Program to provide training material. Anthropic says the program is limited to its own API and does not apply to Bedrock or Vertex.

How telemetry defaults differ by provider

These settings address nonessential telemetry and reporting; they do not stop the model requests needed to use Claude Code. Defaults and available controls can change by release or provider, so check the current data usage documentation and your organization’s configuration before relying on a setting.
What telemetry settings do not secure in CI
Disabling telemetry does not make a CI workflow safe by itself. A pipeline’s risk depends on what credentials and permissions it exposes, which events can start it, what code it runs, and how the execution environment is isolated. Claude Code supports non-interactive runs with -p; automation should therefore be treated as an explicitly permissioned job, not as an interactive session with a person watching each step.

Anthropic describes read-only permissions as the default, with explicit approval for additional actions such as editing files or running commands. It also describes write access as limited to the working directory and descendants, subject to permissions. Its security documentation recommends reviewing proposed code and commands, using project-specific permissions for sensitive repositories, and considering devcontainers for added isolation. These controls reduce exposure but should not be treated as eliminating prompt-injection or supply-chain risk.
Review the workflow boundary
- Check which events trigger the workflow, especially whether it runs on pull requests from forks or other untrusted contributors.
- Protect secrets from jobs that execute untrusted code, and provide only the credentials required for that job.
- Grant the GitHub App and workflow only the permissions needed; review the actual actions and tools enabled.
- Protect workflow-file changes and review or pin third-party actions according to your organization’s policy.
- Use an isolated environment, such as a devcontainer where appropriate, and inspect proposed commands and changes before they reach protected branches or deployment credentials.
Anthropic’s GitHub Actions guidance calls out correct GitHub App configuration, workflow triggers, app permissions, and API or cloud credentials. The checklist above is CI security practice to apply alongside product controls; it is not a guarantee that Claude Code configures those safeguards automatically.

Network controls, proxies, and gateways
Anthropic documents corporate proxy routing as an option for monitoring and compliance. Its proxy guidance lists api.anthropic.com, statsig.anthropic.com, and sentry.io among required endpoints. It also says Claude Code does not currently support NO_PROXY or SOCKS proxies, which may affect how your network policy is designed. See Anthropic’s network configuration documentation.
A gateway may centralize authentication, usage tracking, budgets, and audit logging. Those features shift where requests and logs are handled; they do not establish that a gateway is safe or that its retention meets your needs. Anthropic’s gateway guide says Anthropic does not endorse, maintain, or audit LiteLLM. Evaluate any gateway’s access controls, logging, retention, and security independently.

How to assess the provider and deployment you actually use
Provider choice is only one part of the privacy picture. Anthropic’s documentation establishes the difference in default nonessential telemetry for direct API versus Bedrock or Vertex; identity and key control, request handling, invocation logs, organization-level retention, and CI access depend on your cloud and workflow configuration.
- Confirm the request path: identify whether Claude Code uses the Anthropic API, Bedrock, Vertex, or a gateway, including any proxy in between.
- Verify settings in the installed release: check telemetry, error reporting, and bug-command controls in the actual environment rather than assuming defaults.
- Map data and logs: determine where prompts, outputs, session files, feedback, proxy records, cloud invocation logs, and gateway logs may be stored, and who can access them.
- Audit the CI job: inspect triggers, credentials, app and workflow permissions, enabled tools, and isolation for the specific repository and job.
- Set retention and review rules: align local session behavior, organization retention choices, and third-party logging with your policy; recheck after product or configuration changes.
For any deployment, the decisive evidence is its current configuration and data path. Anthropic’s published behavior is useful guidance, but it does not substitute for reviewing the organization’s provider settings, CI workflows, and network controls.
