Apple’s M6 pairs a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU with a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and Apple says its first 2 nm chip delivers up to 170GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. A September 2026 GPU FFT study found that large-batch transforms could run into a memory-bandwidth limit. That is meaningful evidence for data-intensive work, but it does not show that every M6 app is bandwidth-bound—or that the chip is universally slow.
What Apple says the M6 includes
Apple announced M6 on August 25, 2026, calling it its first 2 nm chip and naming the new Mac mini as its debut device. The company specifies a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine and up to 170GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. These are Apple’s announced specifications, not independent benchmark results. Apple’s announcement attributes this characterization to Sri Santhanam, vice president of Apple’s Silicon Engineering Group: “Built using the cutting-edge 2 nm process, M6 combines a new CPU complex, two additional CPU and GPU cores, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and more unified memory bandwidth to power through workloads with amazing energy efficiency.”
Why memory bandwidth can limit performance
Memory bandwidth is the rate at which data can move between memory and a processor. A chip can have substantial CPU or GPU compute capacity and still spend time waiting for data if a workload repeatedly reads and writes large amounts of it. In that situation, adding compute resources—or using a smaller process label—does not necessarily produce a matching increase in application speed.
Apple’s “up to 170GB/s” is a peak unified-memory specification. It should not be treated as the throughput every program will achieve: results depend on how much data a task moves, whether the data is reused from cache or other on-chip storage, and the software and measurement method. Nor does the “2 nm” label by itself establish how fast a particular application will run.

What the M6 FFT study measured
A September 2026 arXiv preprint by Bergach and co-authors, Bandwidth, Not FLOPS: FFT Kernels, Matrix Units and SAR Imaging on Apple M6, examined GPU fast Fourier transform (FFT) workloads. The authors report that data movement, rather than arithmetic capacity, constrained their large-batch tests. For selected FFT sizes, tested libraries and kernels measured 149–154 GB/s against the paper’s stated 150 GB/s main-memory limit. Those figures describe the study’s tested setup; they are not a general measurement of all M6 workloads or a replacement for Apple’s up-to 170GB/s specification. Read the preprint and its methods.
Working-set size and cache can change the result
The authors caution that cache-resident benchmarks can overstate real throughput by up to 3.7×, because repeated access to data that remains in cache does not represent the same traffic as accessing main memory. They also report that MPSGraph and MLX lost at least half their speed when some tested transforms grew beyond 32 KiB of GPU local memory. That threshold and slowdown are findings for the tested transforms and software, not a universal cutoff for every M6 program.

Bandwidth limits do not mean the chip cannot be fast
The same preprint reports that register-resident transforms improved on MPSGraph results. For a synthetic aperture radar workload, its authors report a 4096 × 4096 image completed in 8.1 ms on the GPU, or 6.0 ms using half-precision intermediates. These are research results reported by the preprint’s authors, not independently replicated measurements. They illustrate why a bandwidth constraint is a statement about a particular workload and data path, not a verdict that the hardware is simply slow.

FFT tests provide direct evidence about FFT data movement. They do not directly measure games, everyday responsiveness, video work or local language-model inference. MacRumors has separately described memory bandwidth as relevant to large language models running on-device, where model data movement can matter, and reports M6’s 170GB/s as about 10% above M5’s reported 153.6GB/s. That percentage is secondary reporting, not a separate Apple-confirmed comparison in the announcement. MacRumors’ interpretation should not be confused with an LLM benchmark or with the FFT paper’s results.

Apple’s specifications and performance language describe the company’s claims; the preprint offers workload-specific experimental evidence. Neither establishes a consistent product-to-product performance ranking. To judge an M6 system for a particular use, look for benchmarks of that task on a clearly identified machine and configuration, and note whether the test stresses CPU or GPU compute, main-memory traffic, or data locality.
