If an app stops working after a Google Play system update, first restart your phone, check for Android and app updates, then try app-level fixes such as force stopping and clearing the app’s cache. The timing alone does not prove the system update caused the problem. Start by checking whether one app or several apps are affected, and protect app data before clearing it or reinstalling.
First, check what is affected and which update your phone reports
Note the symptom: does the app crash, refuse to open, freeze, stop responding, or fail in only one feature? Also check whether other apps or the phone itself are having trouble. A problem limited to one app points toward app-specific troubleshooting; trouble across several apps may call for checking the device.
To see the update information reported by your phone, open Settings → About phone (or About tablet) and look for Android version, Android security update, and Google Play system update. Labels and paths vary by device. Google’s instructions for checking Android version and update status explain where to find these details. This confirms the status shown in Settings; it does not establish why an app failed.
Try low-risk fixes first
- Restart the phone. Reopen the affected app and check whether the symptom remains.
- Check for an Android system update. Use the system-update page in Settings; its location and wording vary by phone.
- Update the affected app. In Google Play, open Manage apps & devices and install an available update for that app.
- Force stop the app. In Settings, open the app’s information page, choose Force stop, then open the app again. The exact menu names vary by device.
Google Play Help recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step to check whether it fixed the issue. Follow that approach so you can tell which change helped. See Google’s app troubleshooting guide for the steps and device-dependent instructions.

Clear cache before considering data removal
If force stopping does not help, try clearing the affected app’s cache from its app information page in Settings. This removes temporary cached files, not the same thing as clearing the app’s saved data. Cache can build up again, so this may offer only temporary relief.
Clear data or Clear storage is more disruptive: it may erase information saved in the app and could require setting it up again. Before using it, confirm that the app syncs your information or that you know how to recover it. If you cannot verify recovery, do not clear data yet.

Consider reinstalling only after checking recovery options
If the app still fails, Google’s troubleshooting guide also includes syncing the device’s time with Google’s servers and uninstalling and reinstalling the app where possible. Uninstalling can erase saved app data, so check backup, sync, and account-recovery options first. Google notes that reinstalling does not work for Pixel essential apps.

Do not treat Google Play services as a routine first fix
Google Play system update status, app updates, and Google Play services are distinct. Google describes Play services as an Android component that connects apps to other Google services; it is not the Play Store app. Its Google Play services guidance recommends checking that Play services is up to date and trying other options before clearing its cache or storage.
Clearing Google Play services storage may remove saved information, including credentials or payment-related items, and require you to authenticate again. For a failure isolated to one app, work through that app’s fixes first rather than clearing Play services data.

If several apps or the phone are affected
When multiple apps fail or the device itself is unstable, investigate the phone rather than repeatedly resetting individual apps. Google’s Android device troubleshooting guide covers system updates, storage, and safe mode. Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps, which can help distinguish a broader device problem from trouble caused by a downloaded app. Follow the phone maker’s instructions for entering safe mode because the steps differ by device.
Google’s guide also flags low free storage as a possible source of phone problems: it says issues may begin when less than 10% of storage is free. This is general device guidance, not evidence that a Google Play system update caused an app failure. For device-specific instructions or persistent system-wide trouble, contact the phone manufacturer’s support.
