For Windows 11 software development, choose a laptop that meets Windows 11 compatibility requirements, then size its memory, processor and SSD for the tools and workloads you actually plan to run. Windows 11’s minimum specifications are only an operating-system eligibility floor—not a comfortable development target. For Visual Studio users, Microsoft recommends 16 GB of RAM for typical professional solutions and says the IDE works best with 64 GB and a CPU with 16 or more cores.

What specifications matter most in a Windows 11 development laptop?

Prioritize enough RAM for your IDE and simultaneous applications, a capable processor, an SSD with room for tools and projects, and a screen with usable resolution. Check processor architecture against the development tools you rely on, especially if considering an ARM laptop.

  • RAM: Match capacity to your projects and multitasking. Microsoft’s Visual Studio guidance offers a useful reference for that IDE, not a universal rule for all programming.
  • Processor: Compare the actual processor and your workload; core count alone does not establish how fast a particular laptop will compile or run applications.
  • Storage: Prefer an SSD and leave space for development tools, repositories, and any virtual machines or containers you use.
  • Display: Look for at least 1920×1080 if you use Visual Studio. A higher-resolution built-in screen or external monitor can provide more workspace.
  • Architecture: Confirm that your IDE, language tools, extensions, and workloads support the laptop’s processor architecture.

How much RAM do you need for programming on Windows 11?

There is no single RAM capacity that suits every programming workflow. For Visual Studio 2026, Microsoft recommends 16 GB for typical professional solutions and says the IDE works best with 64 GB. Treat 16 GB as a grounded starting point for that stated workload, and consider more memory if you expect larger solutions or many simultaneous workloads. The 64 GB figure is Microsoft’s best-performance guidance for Visual Studio, not a requirement for every developer or IDE.

Windows 11 itself has a 4 GB RAM minimum, but that is an operating-system compatibility requirement, not a practical target for development. Applications and workloads can require considerably more.

What processor should you look for?

For Visual Studio 2026, Microsoft recommends a quad-core-or-better processor and says the IDE works best with a CPU with 16 or more cores. These are recommendations for Visual Studio, not a ranking of laptop CPUs or a promise of a particular compile time. The right choice depends on the tools and workloads you run.

Do not use core count as your only comparison. The available guidance does not compare individual laptop processors or measure compile performance, battery life, cooling, or price. Check model-specific evidence for those considerations when comparing laptops.

How much SSD storage is enough?

Microsoft recommends an SSD for Windows and Visual Studio. A Visual Studio 2026 installation can use between 2.5 GB and 210 GB depending on selected features; typical installations require 20–50 GB of free space. These figures cover the IDE installation, not all your projects and other applications, so allow additional room for the rest of your development setup.

Windows 11’s 64 GB storage minimum is an eligibility floor. It is not a sensible capacity target for a development laptop once the operating system, IDEs, tools, repositories, and working files are considered.

What display resolution should a developer laptop have?

Microsoft says Visual Studio works best at 1920×1080 or higher. The stated minimum assumes 100% display scaling; Windows scaling changes the effective logical resolution and how much content fits on screen. A qualifying display resolution does not guarantee a comfortable workspace, so consider how you arrange code, documentation, and other windows.

Is 16 GB RAM enough for Visual Studio?

Microsoft recommends 16 GB for typical professional Visual Studio solutions, so it is a reasonable starting point for that workload. The same guidance says Visual Studio works best with 64 GB. Choose according to the size of your solutions and how much else you run at once; Microsoft’s higher figure is best-performance guidance, not a universal minimum.

Should you buy an ARM or x64 development laptop?

Visual Studio 2026 supports Windows 11 on both ARM64 and AMD64/x64 processors, but Microsoft lists several Visual Studio workloads as unsupported on ARM64. The supported status of the IDE alone does not guarantee that every workload or tool you need will work.

Microsoft lists these Visual Studio workloads as unsupported on ARM64, with the stated exceptions:

Do you need a dedicated graphics card for software development?

The cited Windows 11 and Visual Studio requirements do not establish a dedicated GPU as necessary for ordinary Visual Studio development. Check the requirements of your specific tools and workload rather than treating a discrete graphics card as a general developer prerequisite. Windows 11 does require compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver and DirectX 12 support, but that is not the same as requiring a dedicated GPU.

Is a Copilot+ PC necessary for development?

No general software-development requirement for an NPU is established by Microsoft’s Visual Studio or Windows 11 guidance here. Copilot+ PC eligibility is a separate category: Microsoft specifies a compatible NPU rated at 40 or more TOPS, 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage. Consider those criteria if you specifically want Copilot+ features or have a local AI workload that needs them; they are not a baseline for ordinary development.

How do Windows 11 minimums compare with Visual Studio guidance?

Windows 11’s minimums determine whether a device meets the operating-system requirements. Visual Studio’s recommendations address a more demanding application and workload. The different figures serve different purposes, so passing the Windows check does not mean a laptop is well configured for development.

Can you use WSL for Linux development on Windows 11?

Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) provides a Linux distribution and Linux command-line tools directly on Windows. Microsoft’s installation guide says Windows 11 users can install it with wsl --install; distributions installed through that command use WSL 2 by default. The guide does not specify hardware sizing recommendations for WSL workloads, so size memory, processor, and storage according to the tools and projects you plan to run.

How to choose a practical configuration

  • General coding and lighter toolchains: Start with a supported Windows 11 configuration, then choose enough memory and SSD capacity for your editor, browser, repositories, and other tools. Visual Studio recommendations should not be treated as requirements for unrelated IDEs.
  • Typical professional Visual Studio solutions: Use Microsoft’s 16 GB RAM recommendation as a starting point. Consider higher-memory configurations if you expect larger solutions or substantial multitasking.
  • Heavy Visual Studio or multitasking workloads: Microsoft’s best-performance guidance is 64 GB RAM and a CPU with 16 or more cores. It does not address the resulting laptop’s battery life, cooling, weight, or price, which require model-specific comparison.

When assessing a particular laptop, verify its exact RAM configuration and whether it can be upgraded, SSD capacity, processor architecture, Windows support, display, ports, warranty, thermals, battery life, current price, and availability. Those model-level details determine whether a specification sheet translates into a suitable machine for your needs.
