If you shared sensitive information with an AI chatbot, stop entering more, identify exactly what you sent, and use the service’s controls to delete the conversation and submit a privacy request if available. If you included a password or login credential, change it at the account it unlocks. Sharing information does not prove it was used for training, viewed by a person, or exposed publicly—but deletion may not immediately erase every retained copy.
1. Stop and identify what you shared
Do not add more sensitive details while you assess the situation. Review the conversation, if it is still available, and note which categories of information it contains:
- Passwords, recovery codes, API keys, or other login credentials
- Financial details, such as card or bank information
- Health or medical information
- Identifying information about you or another person
- Confidential work, client, or business material
- Information about a child or minor
Canada’s privacy regulator advises people to avoid sharing sensitive or identifiable information with chatbots, alter identifying details, avoid entering information about other people and minors, review privacy settings, and consider deleting chat history where that option exists. 2. Take the action that matches the information
If you shared a password or credential
Change it directly at the service it unlocks, not through a link in the chatbot conversation. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Secure the account using its available account-security controls. This is a precaution for a disclosed credential; disclosure alone does not establish that anyone accessed or compromised the account.

If you shared someone else’s information or protected work material
If the chat included information about another person, a child, an employer, a client, or a regulated record, follow the relevant organizational reporting process and local privacy procedures. The correct legal obligations and reporting route depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances; there is no universal deadline or procedure established for every case.
If you shared other sensitive information
Use the provider’s deletion and privacy controls described below. Do not assume that a saved conversation is private simply because it is not publicly visible. Providers may store submitted content, and their policies can permit certain uses or access under specified conditions. That possibility is not evidence that your particular content was used or seen.
3. Delete the conversation and review privacy controls
Find the chat and use the provider’s delete or clear-history option. Then review the account’s privacy settings and submit a privacy request if the service offers one. Deleting a chat and opting out of model improvement are separate actions: turning off a training-related setting does not necessarily delete a saved conversation.

ChatGPT and OpenAI
OpenAI says privacy controls vary by plan, account type, and workspace settings. In ChatGPT, model-improvement preferences and other data controls are managed in Data Controls; memory settings are under Personalization. Check the controls available to your account rather than assuming that a consumer account and a managed workspace work identically. OpenAI says turning off “Improve the model for everyone” means new conversations will not be used to train its models, but those conversations can still appear in chat history. The setting does not delete or hide saved chats. Delete the chat separately if you want it removed from history.
OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for deletion from its systems within 30 days, except when they have already been de-identified and disassociated from the user or must be retained for security or legal reasons. This is OpenAI’s stated policy for its consumer services, not a general chatbot deletion guarantee. OpenAI also says a privacy request can be submitted through its Privacy Portal or by emailing dsar@openai.com; submitting a request is not a guarantee that every requested action will be approved or that every copy is immediately erased.

OpenAI describes Temporary Chats as not appearing in history, not creating or updating memories, and not being used to improve models while temporary. It may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Personalization can be selected before a Temporary Chat begins; when enabled, existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins may be used. If a Temporary Chat is saved, OpenAI says it becomes a regular chat and follows ordinary personalization and model-improvement settings. A temporary mode is therefore not the same as no processing or retention.
For consumer services, OpenAI says content may be shared with trusted service providers for service delivery. It also says a limited number of authorized personnel and providers may access content for specified needs such as security incidents, support, legal matters, or model improvement unless the user has opted out. OpenAI says chat content is not shared for marketing or advertising. These are OpenAI’s statements about its consumer services; they should not be generalized to every provider or workspace.
Claude and Anthropic
Anthropic’s consumer guidance identifies financial details such as Social Security numbers, card numbers, and bank details; health information; passwords or private login credentials; and confidential business or personal documents as highly sensitive information to handle carefully. It says Claude incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. However, conversations flagged by safety classifiers may still be used for internal trust-and-safety models, harmful-content detection, policy enforcement, or safety research. Anthropic also says that when users allow chats to improve Claude, it applies privacy protections, including de-linking data from user IDs before review and limiting access to a small number of personnel involved in model training. Its cited guidance covers consumer Claude products; do not assume those terms describe commercial or API products.
GOV.UK Chat
GOV.UK Chat illustrates why clearing visible history may not immediately remove server-side data: its privacy notice says users can clear history from their device, but conversations and linked data are kept on servers for 12 months and then deleted. That period applies to GOV.UK Chat as described in its notice, not to other chatbots. GOV.UK Chat: privacy notice.

A deletion button can remove a conversation from the history you see without immediately erasing every retained copy. Retention periods and exceptions depend on the provider and product. The examples above differ: OpenAI states a deletion window of up to 30 days with exceptions, while GOV.UK Chat states a 12-month server retention period after clearing history from the device.

Likewise, a training opt-out is not a deletion command, and a temporary or incognito mode may still involve processing or safety retention. Before relying on any control, check the current policy for the specific service, account, and workspace you used. The available controls can change and may differ between consumer and managed accounts.
It is also important to separate possibility from proof. A provider may collect and store chat content, and Canada’s privacy regulator identifies possible training, profiling or decision-making uses, uncertain future use, and the possibility that a chatbot could disclose information it has learned about a user. Those are risks to consider; they do not establish that your specific submission was used, reviewed by a person, or exposed publicly. 5. Make future chatbot use less revealing
- Replace names and other identifying details with neutral labels, such as “Client A” or “Person B.”
- Share only the minimum excerpt or facts needed to get help; remove account numbers, contact details, credentials, and unnecessary personal context.
- Avoid entering another person’s or a minor’s personal information unless you have a clear, appropriate reason and authority to do so.
- Check the specific service’s settings for model improvement, memory, temporary chats, and deletion before submitting sensitive material.
- For employer, client, or regulated information, use only tools and workflows approved by the relevant organization.
These precautions reduce the amount of identifying material in a prompt; they cannot guarantee how a provider processes or retains information.
6. Use the right privacy or complaint route for your location
Your rights and complaint options depend on where you live, which service you used, and whether the account was personal or managed by an organization. The Canadian privacy regulator’s May 6, 2026 release describes concerns found in a joint investigation of OpenAI’s initial ChatGPT training and deployment, including collection, consent and transparency, accuracy, access/correction/deletion, and accountability. It says OpenAI implemented and committed to further measures; the federal complaint was found well-founded and conditionally resolved, while conclusions varied among regulators according to the laws they oversee. That regulatory outcome is context, not a decision about an individual chat or a determination of your rights elsewhere. Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: investigation release.
If you want to pursue a complaint, first identify your country, state, or province and the chatbot provider, then consult the relevant privacy regulator’s official guidance. Canada’s federal privacy office invites people with privacy concerns or complaints about an organization to contact it; that route is relevant to its jurisdiction. Do not rely on a general article to establish a statutory deadline or legal duty for an unspecified location.
