Choose a one-off influencer campaign when you have a specific activation or deliverable to execute. Consider an ongoing creator partnership when you need continuity, repeated collaboration, and learning across campaigns. The distinction is about how the relationship is structured—not a guarantee that one approach will produce better results.
What is the difference?
“Influencer marketing” is a broad term for marketing that works with people who influence an audience. A one-off campaign is a bounded arrangement, often focused on a particular launch or placement. In this comparison, a “creator partnership” means a continuing relationship that can span multiple campaigns, formats, or experiences. These labels are not standardized across every company.
Deloitte describes brand-creator deals as often transactional and one-off, and contrasts them with sustained relationships. The practical difference is whether you are buying a defined activation or building a relationship intended to continue.

Which approach fits your brand’s goal?
| Decision point | One-off influencer campaign | Ongoing creator partnership |
|---|---|---|
| Strategic question | Do you need a specific activation, launch, or deliverable? | Do you need continuity, repeated collaboration, or audience familiarity over time? |
| Relationship | A bounded deal or campaign, often transactional. | A continuing relationship across campaigns, formats, or experiences. |
| Selection | Prioritize audience and brand fit for the particular activation; do not choose on follower count alone. | Prioritize shared audience, brand alignment, creator community, and fit that can hold over time. |
| Creative work | Agree on specific deliverables and ensure endorsements do not imply product experience the creator has not had. | Work with formats the creator already uses, while setting clear brand and compliance boundaries. |
| Measurement | Set an objective and evaluate the defined campaign. | Plan to observe performance and learning over time, rather than judging the relationship by a single post. |
| Risk to manage | A single placement may not create ongoing familiarity; the available sources do not quantify this effect. | Continuing work requires fit, clear expectations, and measurement; there is no established universal ideal duration. |
These are decision axes, not fixed industry definitions. A bounded campaign can still involve substantial creative collaboration, and a continuing partnership still needs clear deliverables.

When a one-off campaign makes sense
A one-off campaign is a reasonable fit when the work has a clear endpoint: for example, a launch, seasonal activation, or a defined piece of content. It can keep the scope focused on one objective and deliverable. Decide what success means before the campaign begins, then assess the agreed activation against that objective.
A single placement should not be treated as proof that an ongoing relationship would—or would not—work. The cited sources do not establish a universal performance advantage for either arrangement.

When to consider a sustained creator partnership
Consider a continuing relationship when repeated work could help a creator understand the brand and give audiences more chances to encounter it. Deloitte presents continuity and alignment as strategic reasons for sustained collaborations, not as guaranteed outcomes. A longer relationship is most defensible when the creator’s audience and approach fit the brand and there is a meaningful plan for what the collaboration will do over time.
Continuity can also make it more useful to assess performance across multiple campaigns. That calls for a measurement plan capable of tracking the relationship over time, rather than treating each post as the entire result.

How to choose and structure the relationship
- Start with the business outcome. If you need a discrete activation or deliverable, evaluate a bounded campaign. If you need repeated collaboration and learning over time, consider a sustained relationship.
- Check audience and brand fit before audience size. Deloitte advises looking for strong alignment and shared audience segments. A smaller creator with high brand alignment may be more valuable to a particular brand than a larger creator whose audience is poorly matched.
- Agree on creative roles and formats. Deloitte identifies tutorials, unboxings, reviews, and demos as examples of creator-native formats. Discuss which formats suit the creator and the objective, and leave room for authentic integration within agreed boundaries.
- Define measurement before publishing. Specify the objective, what will be tracked, and the time period. For an ongoing relationship, use a plan that can show performance and learning across campaigns.
- Set expectations for claims and disclosure. Make sure the creator’s statements reflect actual product experience, and ensure material connections are disclosed clearly with each relevant endorsement.
What consumer data can—and cannot—tell you
Deloitte Insights’ 2026 article reports an online survey of 3,518 U.S. consumers conducted in May 2026, with data weighted to the most recent census to represent U.S. consumers. Its findings describe reported attitudes and behavior; they do not prove that a sustained partnership caused a purchase or outperformed a one-off campaign.
- 65% of U.S. consumers said they engage with creators or creator-led content across platforms.
- Among consumers who engage with creators, about 60% said they do so daily, and about 70% said they return regularly to watch the same creators.
- Among creator-engaged consumers, 40% said a creator’s topic is a top reason they follow a specific creator. More than half said trusted creator recommendations make them more likely to consider and buy from brands; 45% said creator-led ads feel more authentic than traditional ads.
- Roughly 60% of U.S. consumers who engage with creators reported a purchase primarily based on a creator recommendation or sponsorship in the previous six months; Deloitte reports nearly 75% for Gen Z and millennials.
Deloitte also reports higher purchase likelihood among respondents who said trusted creator recommendations influence them (2.5 times), who considered creator-led ads more authentic than traditional ads (2.0 times), and who repeatedly engaged with the same creators (1.2 times), compared with respondents who did not share those views. These are comparisons between respondents, not proof that any particular campaign structure caused the difference. Read Deloitte Insights’ 2026 analysis.

Disclosure and truthful endorsements apply to both
A payment, free or discounted product, or other benefit can create a material connection that should be disclosed. FTC staff advises that disclosures be clear, easy to notice, and placed with the endorsement itself; followers should not be expected to know about the relationship. The FTC guide states: “The disclosure should be placed with the endorsement message itself.” Do not rely only on a platform disclosure tool, and do not allow a creator to describe product experience they have not had. See the FTC staff guide, Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers, and its Endorsement Guides Q&A.
