Yes—Google Voice can be your main number for everyday calls, texts, and voicemail. But the basic personal service is not a mobile phone plan, and it does not support 911. If you rely on Google Voice as your primary contact number, keep an underlying phone service for cellular connectivity and emergency calls.
What it means to use Google Voice as your main number
Google Voice gives you a number for calls, texts, and voicemail. You can use it in the Google Voice app or at voice.google.com. You can also link other phone numbers so calls to your Voice number ring on those phones; Google allows up to six linked numbers. Features include voicemail transcription, call screening, spam protection, and call blocking. Google’s feature and calling documentation describes the available options.
That makes Voice useful as a primary contact number: it can be the number you give people and use for routine communication. It does not, by itself, replace the mobile service that connects a phone to a cellular network. Google says, “Google Voice doesn’t offer mobile service plans.” Google’s porting guidance also explains that you need a phone plan and can link its number if you want calls to ring on a phone.
Can Google Voice replace your cell phone plan?
No. The basic personal Google Voice service is not a cellular plan. It can make and receive calls through the app or browser, but those internet calls rely on an internet connection. If you want calls to your Voice number forwarded to a mobile phone, you need a mobile plan and should link that phone’s number.

Google estimates that an internet call uses about 0.2 MB of data per minute; actual use varies with connection quality and speed. This is Google’s estimate, not a guaranteed amount. Google’s data-usage guidance provides the figure.
Can you call 911 with Google Voice?
Do not assume that you can call 911 from every Google Voice account. Google documents emergency calling for specified Workspace-managed or paid standalone Voice accounts; the basic personal tier does not include 911 support. Check the emergency-calling capabilities of your exact account and plan before depending on it.

Even on accounts that support emergency calling, Google warns: “In the event of a power outage, loss of your internet connection, or a Google Voice service outage, emergency calling will not be available on Google Voice.” For calls made in a browser, Google instructs users to use the device’s phone app to place an emergency call. Keep an alternative phone service available for emergencies. Google’s emergency-services guidance explains the account and outage limitations.
Can you keep your current number?
For a personal US Google Voice account, you may be able to port an eligible mobile number into Voice. Google charges $20 for an eligible port-in, estimates that the number transfer can take up to 48 hours, and says text messages can take up to three business days to transfer. Not all mobile numbers are eligible. These fee and timing details apply to personal accounts; Workspace-managed accounts have separate administrator and business-porting processes. Google’s number-porting instructions cover eligibility and the process.

Do not cancel your existing phone plan before Google confirms the port is complete. Porting can affect or cancel carrier service, so check with your carrier about what happens to your account and plan before starting. If you want calls to ring on a phone after porting, Google says to obtain a phone plan and link the new number.

| Your need | What to consider |
|---|---|
| One number for routine calls, texts, and voicemail | Voice can serve as your main contact number through its app or browser, with forwarding and voicemail tools. |
| Cellular calling and connectivity | Basic personal Voice is not a mobile plan. Keep or obtain carrier service if you need cellular coverage or want calls forwarded to a mobile phone. |
| Emergency calling | Confirm whether your exact account supports 911. Internet, power, or Google Voice outages can make emergency calling unavailable. |
| Moving an existing mobile number | Check eligibility and carrier consequences before porting. For an eligible number on a personal US account, Google lists a $20 fee and transfer estimates of up to 48 hours for the number and three business days for texts. |
| Calls over the internet | Google estimates about 0.2 MB per minute; actual data use varies with connection quality and speed. |
Google Voice is a reasonable choice when you want one public number and its app, browser, forwarding, and voicemail features suit your routine. It is not a complete stand-in for phone service if you need cellular connectivity or dependable emergency access independent of internet and service availability.
