You can make calls and send texts through Google Voice without using Google Messages. On a computer, open voice.google.com in a supported browser; on a phone, use the Google Voice app. Calls and texts are handled within Voice itself. A linked carrier number is optional unless you want calls forwarded to it.

Mobile app The Google Voice app on your phone You want to manage calls and messages on your phone without using Google Messages.

Google describes Voice as a service that provides a number for calls, texts, and voicemail and works on browsers and mobile devices. Availability and features can vary by account and location; check Google’s Google Voice overview for current details.

Make a call from a computer

  1. Go to voice.google.com and sign in to the Google account that uses Voice.
  2. Use Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari.
  3. Open Calls. Choose a recent caller, search for a contact, or enter a number using the keypad. Include the country code for an international call.
  4. Check the Call as field before placing the call to see whether it will use your Google Voice number.

For calls that may cost money, check the destination’s rate in Voice and confirm the call is routed through Voice. Google warns that if its routing or cost message does not appear, the call may not be using Voice and your carrier could charge you instead. See Google’s calling-cost and routing guidance.

Make a call from the Google Voice app

  1. Open the Google Voice app.
  2. Go to Calls and place the call from there.

Google says calls placed from the Voice app always use your Google Voice number. On eligible personal accounts, you may also be able to configure the phone’s calling app to use your Voice number. That option is not available for Google Workspace accounts or personal accounts with Voice installed in a Work Profile. See Google’s Android calling instructions.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Send texts without Google Messages

  1. On a computer, open voice.google.com and select Messages. On a phone, open the Google Voice app and go to its messaging screen.
  2. Start a conversation or open an existing one, enter the recipient and message, then send it from Voice.

Messages sent from the Voice app or website use Wi-Fi or mobile data, not the Google Messages app. Google’s guidance says Voice can send texts to US and Canadian numbers. Your mobile plan may charge for received texts, and data-plan charges may apply when you use mobile data. See Google’s texting guidance.

Decide whether to link a carrier number

You do not need to link a carrier number just to make calls or send texts directly in the Voice app or on the website. Linking is useful if you want Voice calls forwarded to a phone that rings on your carrier line.

Understand possible charges and emergency-call limits

  • Calls: Google describes most calls from the US to US and Canadian destinations as free, but some destinations cost extra and international calls have listed rates. Charges can also depend on how the call is routed. Check the current rate and routing information in Google Voice Help before calling.
  • Texts: Sending from Voice uses Wi-Fi or mobile data; data charges may apply. Your carrier plan may charge for received texts.
  • Emergencies: Personal Google Voice is not a replacement for emergency calling. Google directs personal-account users to make emergency calls with the device’s phone app. See Google’s Voice calling guidance.
