If the sender texted your regular mobile number instead, troubleshoot that as a carrier SMS problem.
First, find out which number received the text
Ask the sender whether they used your Google Voice number or your mobile carrier number. These messages follow different paths:

If the sender texted your Google Voice number
Check the Voice inbox and Spam
- Open the Google Voice app.
- Tap Messages and look for the conversation.
- If it is not there, check the Spam folder.
If the message is absent from both places, confirm that the sender used your Voice number. Some websites, including banks and subscription services, do not send texts to Google Voice numbers. For a verification message from one of these services, you may need to use your mobile carrier number instead. Google Voice Help
Turn on forwarding to your linked phone number
If the text appears in Voice but not in Google Messages, check whether Voice is set to forward messages to your device:

- In the Voice app, open Menu > Settings.
- Tap Forward messages to linked numbers.
- Check that your device number is selected.
When forwarding is enabled, new Voice texts can arrive in your default texting app. Unchecking the device number stops forwarding, but the messages remain available in Google Voice. Menu wording may vary by app version. Google Voice Help
Check whether Voice texting is available for your situation
Google Voice texting availability depends on account and geography. Google says paid Voice subscriptions have texting only in the US; Voice-number texts can be sent to US, Canadian, and Puerto Rican numbers subject to territorial exclusions. Inbound texts may come from anywhere, but some providers will not send to Voice numbers. If you recently ported your Voice number, texting may take three working days after the transfer completes. If the sender texted your mobile carrier number
Use Google’s checks for missing SMS messages in Google Messages. Work through these in order:
- Update Google Messages. Install any available app update.
- Verify the default texting app. Confirm Google Messages is set as your phone’s default SMS app.
- Check the SIM. Make sure the SIM is installed correctly.
- Confirm carrier service. Check that your carrier supports texting and that your plan or balance allows it.
- Check the connection. Confirm you have signal and that airplane mode is off.
- If you recently used an iPhone with this number, deregister iMessage.
These steps address carrier SMS delivery; they do not change whether Google Voice forwards its own messages. Google Messages Help Google Messages Help

Use what you find to narrow down the cause
- Text appears in Voice, not Messages: Check Voice forwarding to the linked device number.
- Text appears in neither app: Verify which number the sender used, check Voice Spam, and confirm the sender or service can text Google Voice numbers.
- Carrier texts are missing too: Follow the Google Messages, SIM, carrier, and connection checks above.
