Dental photogrammetry and a laboratory scanner usually do different jobs in an implant case. Photogrammetry captures the spatial positions of implant-connected markers—especially useful when several implants span an edentulous arch. A lab scanner digitizes a physical cast, impression, or model for laboratory work. In some workflows and studies, it also supplies a reference scan. They can be complementary; neither is a universal substitute for the other.

What each technology captures

Dental photogrammetry registers implant positions

A photogrammetry workflow uses markers attached to implant-level components to determine the implants’ relative positions in space. The result is implant-position data for the digital workflow, rather than a scan of every surface of the mouth. That makes it particularly relevant to full-arch cases, where small position errors across widely separated implants can affect how a framework fits.

Markers, software libraries, and implant-platform connections must be compatible with the specific capture system. For example, PIC Dental describes a smartphone-based app and a marker library; its product information is a vendor description, not independent evidence that a given combination will work for every implant platform. Check the current compatibility documentation for the intended system and components: PIC app and cloud.

A laboratory scanner digitizes a physical object

A lab scanner captures the geometry of an object such as a cast, impression, or model. It can support laboratory design and production, or digitize a physical model to create a reference dataset in a study. That is not the same capture task as registering implant positions directly with photogrammetry.

In one 2024 in-vitro comparison on a six-implant edentulous maxillary model, researchers compared conventional impressions, intraoral scans with and without splinting, and stereophotogrammetry. An industrial blue-light scanner generated the baseline, while a laboratory scanner digitized conventional casts. The distinction matters: a scanner used to establish or digitize a reference is not automatically the method that captured the implant positions in the patient. Cheng and colleagues’ 2024 study.

How the workflows compare

Question Photogrammetry Laboratory scanner
Main capture role Registers the relative positions of implant-connected markers. Digitizes a physical cast, impression, or model.
Typical input Compatible markers and implant components placed for the capture system. A physical object presented to the scanner, such as a cast or model.
What the result represents Implant-position data for the digital implant workflow. A digital representation of the scanned physical object.
Where it may fit Direct implant-position capture, particularly for multiple implants across a full arch. Laboratory digitization, production workflows, or scanning a physical reference model.
Main compatibility check Marker, implant-platform, and system-library support. Whether the scanner and software support the lab’s object, file, and CAD/CAM workflow.

A lab may use both technologies in the same case: photogrammetry can provide implant coordinates, while a lab scanner digitizes a cast or other physical object needed for the laboratory workflow. The exact combination depends on the case and the lab’s software and equipment; the term “scanner” alone does not establish which object was captured or how implant positions were registered.

What accuracy studies say—and what they do not

Published comparisons do not support a universal ranking across all systems and implant cases. Accuracy results depend on the tested arch and implant distribution, capture system, markers, reference device, and measurement method. An instrument’s manufacturer-stated precision and a study’s measurement of implant-position or prosthesis fit are different kinds of evidence; a small scanner specification does not by itself predict the fit of a finished prosthesis.

Systematic reviews show a trend, with important limits

A 2023 systematic review included nine studies—three clinical and six in vitro—comparing digital and conventional full-arch implant-impression methods. It concluded that intraoral scanning and photogrammetry showed comparable accuracy for registering implant positions, while noting substantial methodological variation. The authors called for clinical verification of acceptable prosthesis-misfit thresholds. Read the 2023 review.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis included 13 studies: three in vivo and ten in vitro. Stereophotogrammetry had higher accuracy than intraoral scanning in 10 of the 13 included studies, but the review also reported variation and exceptions across study conditions and measures. Its result describes the included literature, not a guarantee that every photogrammetry system will outperform every intraoral scanner in a particular patient. The authors called for further clinical trials. Read the 2025 review and meta-analysis.

Individual tests apply only to their tested setup

In a 2025 in-vitro study, Brakoč and colleagues compared 120 scans on a four-implant edentulous mandibular model. The tested Aoralscan Elite IPG configuration had the highest accuracy across the study’s measured parameters among the evaluated intraoral-scanning configurations. The authors described the findings as preliminary and said clinical studies are needed. This result concerns that model and those configurations; it is not a comparison proving that photogrammetry beats a laboratory scanner or every other capture system. Read the 2025 study.

How to choose for an implant case

Start with the capture task, then check whether the available evidence and equipment match the actual case. A headline accuracy figure is less useful if it comes from a different arch, implant span, reference method, or workflow.

  1. Define what needs to be captured. If the question is the relative positions of multiple implants, assess an implant-position capture workflow such as photogrammetry. If the lab needs a digital version of a cast, impression, or model, assess a lab scanner. If both are needed, plan for the roles to complement one another.
  2. Match the method to the geometry. Note the number and distribution of implants and whether the case is partial or full arch. Look for evidence involving a similar geometry; a result from a four-implant mandibular model does not establish performance for every arch or implant arrangement.
  3. Verify components and platform support. Confirm that markers, scan components, implant platforms, and software libraries are supported together by the chosen capture system. Do not select a marker by appearance or by a generic product name alone.
  4. Confirm the lab handoff. Check file transfer, CAD/CAM compatibility, laboratory software, and how the lab will combine implant-position data with any scanned cast or model. Establish who performs each step and which dataset the lab will use.
  5. Evaluate evidence that resembles the intended use. Check whether a study was in vitro or clinical, which devices and reference instruments it tested, and what “accuracy” meant in that comparison. Keep manufacturer specifications separate from clinical or prosthesis-fit outcomes.
  6. Check practical support before committing. Confirm equipment footprint, training, capture steps, current documentation, and service availability for the intended region with the manufacturer or authorized supplier.

How to read laboratory-scanner specifications

3Shape’s lab-solutions page lists the E4’s manufacturer-stated accuracy as 4 μm under ISO 12836, along with a 9-second full-arch scan time and a 45-second full-arch impression scan time. These are the company’s published specifications for its scanner, not independent clinical findings or a prediction that an implant prosthesis will fit within 4 μm. The page says products are sold through a global partner network; verify the current model, specification, and regional availability with the supplier. See 3Shape’s lab-solutions information.

When comparing a lab scanner with photogrammetry, ask what each reported number measures. A specification for scanning an object under a stated standard cannot be directly substituted for a study outcome measuring implant-position deviation or prosthesis misfit. The methods answer different questions, so a meaningful comparison needs a shared task and a clearly identified reference.
