Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Both Pixel Watch and Apple Watch can alert you after detecting a hard fall and help you contact emergency services, but their documented response flows differ. Google specifies an alert after about 30 seconds and an automatic call after a further 60 seconds without a response. Apple describes a wrist tap, alarm, and alert, with an option to start an emergency call; its reviewed guide does not state an equivalent countdown. Neither manufacturer claims the feature catches every fall, and the official guidance does not establish that one watch is more accurate.
How Pixel Watch Fall Detection works
Google says Pixel Watch uses its motion sensors to detect a hard fall. About 30 seconds later, the watch vibrates, sounds an alarm, and asks whether you want to call emergency services. If you do not respond, it vibrates and alarms again, then places a call after a further 60 seconds and plays an automated voice message. If location permission is enabled, the watch can share your location with emergency services. Google Pixel Watch Help documents this sequence.
Set it up
Turn on Fall Detection in the Safety app on the watch, or in the Pixel Watch app on your phone under Safety & emergency.
Check the connection before relying on a call
- A Wi-Fi Pixel Watch needs its paired phone nearby and connected over Bluetooth to call emergency services.
- An LTE Pixel Watch can call without the phone nearby when it has an active LTE connection. Google notes that some regions require an active LTE carrier or Safety Signal.
- Location sharing requires location permission.
Check regional and user availability
Google lists Fall Detection in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the UK, and the US. The help page also lists supported languages. Google says the feature is temporarily unavailable when the wearer travels to an unsupported region. It is intended for adults and depends on connectivity and other factors.

How Apple Watch Fall Detection works
When Apple Watch detects a hard fall, Apple says it taps your wrist, sounds an alarm, and displays an alert. If you do not need help, tap “I’m OK.” If you need emergency services, drag the Emergency Call slider. If the call connects, the watch plays an audio message telling emergency services it detected a hard fall and shares your current location as latitude and longitude coordinates. After the call, it messages your emergency contacts with your location and information that the watch detected a hard fall and contacted emergency services. Details are in Apple’s Fall Detection guide.
Set it up
On the watch, go to Settings > SOS > Fall Detection. You can also use the iPhone Watch app under Emergency SOS.

Check emergency-call connectivity
Apple says the watch or a nearby iPhone needs a cellular connection or Wi-Fi calling with an internet connection for an emergency call. Its guide also describes attempting satellite contact when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are absent, subject to device and regional restrictions. Verify support for your specific model and location.
Pixel Watch and Apple Watch compared
| Question | Pixel Watch | Apple Watch |
|---|---|---|
| What happens after a detected hard fall? | About 30 seconds before the first alert; after that alert sequence, an unanswered watch calls after a further 60 seconds. | Wrist tap, alarm, and alert; you can dismiss it or start an emergency call. Apple’s reviewed guide does not state an equivalent countdown. |
| What if you do not respond? | Google documents an automatic call and automated voice message. | The reviewed guide explains how to start a call but does not provide matching timing details for an unanswered alert. |
| How is location shared? | Location can be shared with emergency services if location permission is granted. | If the call connects, the watch shares latitude and longitude with emergency services; emergency contacts are messaged after the call. |
| What connection is needed? | Wi-Fi model: paired phone nearby over Bluetooth. LTE model: active LTE connection, with additional regional conditions in some places. | Cellular or Wi-Fi calling with internet on the watch or a nearby iPhone; satellite contact is subject to device and regional restrictions. |
| Can it miss a fall or trigger by mistake? | Yes. Google says it may not detect all falls and high-impact activity may trigger it. | Yes. Apple says it cannot detect all falls and high-impact activity might trigger it. |
What the comparison does—and does not—show
Google’s documentation gives more specific timing for its alert and unanswered-call sequence. Apple’s reviewed guide describes the alert and call options, but does not provide a matching countdown. That documentation difference is not evidence of a difference in detection accuracy: neither source provides a head-to-head test or a comparative detection rate.

Both companies warn that Fall Detection can miss falls and can be triggered by high-impact activity. Treat it as a possible way to get help, not guaranteed protection. Before depending on it, check your watch model, country, connectivity, and the relevant location or emergency-call settings. For Pixel Watch, also check supported language and whether your model is Wi-Fi or LTE; for Apple Watch, check paired-iPhone and regional emergency-call or satellite support.
