An iPhone case can help protect the phone’s finish by putting a barrier between it and dirt, grit, and other contact, but it cannot guarantee a scratch-free phone. Apple’s guidance does not rank case materials for finish protection. Choose a case that fits your exact iPhone model and is easy to remove and clean; its overall design matters more than the material name alone.
How a case helps—and what it cannot guarantee
A case separates at least some of the iPhone’s exterior from objects and substances it might otherwise touch. Apple describes its iPhone 17 Clear Case as designed to protect against scratches and drops, but that is a claim about that specific case, not a comparative test of case materials or proof that any case prevents all finish damage. Apple’s iPhone 17 Clear Case with MagSafe is one model-specific example.
A case can also trap grit or debris against the phone. Removing the case periodically to clean both the phone and case is therefore a practical part of using one; a case is not a substitute for keeping contact surfaces clean.
Which case material works best?
There is no established best material for preventing finish damage in the available official guidance. Apple lists silicone, clear, polycarbonate, and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) cases in its cleaning advice, but does not compare how well those materials protect an iPhone’s finish. Material by itself is not enough to establish a protection ranking.

Apple’s own clear case for iPhone 17 combines optically clear polycarbonate with flexible materials and a scratch-resistant coating on both surfaces. That describes one product’s construction; it does not show that it outperforms cases made with other materials. Apple says the case undergoes “thousands of hours” of testing during design and manufacturing, but does not provide an exact test count, protocol, or comparative result that would establish superior finish protection.
When comparing cases, consider the features that affect how the case meets and covers your phone:

- Exact model fit: Confirm that the case is made for your iPhone model. A precise fit helps the case cover the areas its design is intended to protect.
- Inside surface: Check the case’s interior and whether it includes a lining. This may be a useful design feature to weigh, but Apple’s guidance does not establish that a lining prevents scratches.
- Coverage: Look at which parts of the phone the case covers and whether those match the areas you want protected.
- Ease of removal and cleaning: A case that is straightforward to remove makes it easier to clean the phone and the case interior.
These are practical selection considerations, not a tested formula for damage prevention. A material label such as silicone, TPU, or polycarbonate alone does not guarantee a particular outcome.
Can a case scratch the iPhone finish?
A case is intended to act as a barrier, but dirt or sand caught inside it can remain in contact with the phone. Apple also advises cleaning the iPhone promptly after contact with substances that may stain or damage it. Its examples include dirt or sand, ink, makeup, soap, detergent, acids or acidic foods, and lotions. Apple’s iPhone handling guidance notes that the oleophobic coating wears with normal use and warns: “Cleaning products and abrasive materials will further diminish the coating and may scratch iPhone.”

For those reasons, remove the case and check for debris rather than assuming the case interior stays clean. Avoid abrasive materials or cleaning products on the phone, and follow Apple’s cleaning instructions for the phone and the particular case.

Clean silicone, clear, or Beats cases
- Remove the iPhone from the case.
- Wipe the inside and outside of the case with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
- Do not use window cleaners, household cleaning products, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide.
These instructions apply to the silicone, clear, and Beats cases covered in Apple’s case-cleaning guidance. Apple notes that woven material can change and show wear as its fibers compress; leather can acquire a patina, change color, or stain. Those appearance changes do not establish how well either material prevents damage to an iPhone’s finish.

Clean the iPhone
Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Keep moisture out of openings, and do not use cleaning products or compressed air. Clean the phone promptly after contact with substances that may stain or damage it. Apple’s handling guidance explains that cleaning products and abrasives can further diminish the oleophobic coating and may scratch the phone.
