To choose a phone that lasts longer between charges, compare its tested battery endurance per charge—not just its battery capacity in mAh. Use standardized label data where available, then check independent tests whose brightness, refresh rate and workload resemble how you use your phone. Treat charging speed and long-term battery durability as separate considerations.
Start with endurance per charge, not mAh
Battery capacity, usually listed in milliamp-hours (mAh), is useful context but is not a runtime score. A phone’s screen, processor, software and other components all affect how quickly it uses energy. The European Commission’s smartphone energy label lists rated battery capacity separately from endurance per cycle, making the latter a more direct starting point when comparing covered models.
For phones placed on the EU market and covered by the rules from 20 June 2025, check the energy label or the model’s record in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL). The label reports endurance per charge in hours and minutes using a standardized test intended to represent a typical situation. Confirm that the record matches the exact model you are considering; product records are model-specific and may be corrected. The Commission explains the label’s purpose in its smartphones and tablets guidance.
Outside the EU, label availability and applicable rules may differ. Use comparable independent tests as another point of reference, rather than assuming an EU label exists for every regional variant.

Check whether a battery test matches your use
A test result is most useful when its conditions resemble your habits. Brightness, refresh rate, connectivity and workload can change endurance, so compare phones tested under similar settings and read the methodology rather than treating a ranking as universal.
Screen brightness and refresh rate
A brighter display generally asks more of the battery. Refresh rate also affects endurance: a phone set to a higher refresh rate may behave differently from one tested at a lower setting. Tom’s Guide says its 2026 continuous web-browsing battery test uses 150 nits of brightness and that its rankings use each phone’s default refresh settings. That is one publisher’s test setup, not a universal standard. If you routinely use higher brightness or change refresh settings, its result may not match your day-to-day runtime. Workload and connectivity
Continuous web browsing is only one kind of use. Gaming, video, navigation, mobile data and a mix of everyday tasks can produce different results. Give more weight to tests that describe their workload and settings, and compare like with like. No single publisher’s ranking establishes which phone will last longest for every person or market.
Compare charging separately from runtime
Charging speed tells you how quickly a phone can recharge; it does not make the battery last longer between charges. If frequent top-ups are acceptable but you need them to be quick, compare the phone’s supported charging method and recharge-time information separately from endurance per charge. Check requirements for the exact phone model before choosing a charger; a charger’s advertised wattage alone does not establish that the phone will accept power at that rate. Consider battery durability if you plan to keep the phone
Endurance per charge describes a battery’s runtime in a particular test; durability concerns how its capacity holds up over repeated use. For covered smartphones, the EU Ecodesign regulation sets a threshold of at least 800 charge cycles while retaining 80% of original battery capacity under the regulation’s defined test conditions. This is a regulatory requirement, not a promise that an individual phone will retain that capacity after a particular number of years.
A cycle is not necessarily one plug-in. The European Commission explains that a cycle represents the equivalent of using 100% of the battery’s capacity, which can add up across several partial charges. For example, partial use and recharging can accumulate toward a cycle rather than counting each time the cable is connected as one. The cycle definition appears in the Commission’s consumer guidance on the new smartphone and slate-tablet energy label; the threshold and test conditions are in Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670, consolidated text.
If you intend to keep a phone for several years, also consider repairability and the availability of model-specific repair information. Those factors can matter when a battery’s capacity eventually declines, but they do not tell you how long the phone will run on a fresh charge.
