Samsung does not specify a universal time or percentage that means an update is frozen. If progress does not resume, check the phone and watch connection, retry through an official update menu, then restart the watch before considering more disruptive recovery steps.
1. Check whether the update is still working
During an update, the watch may disconnect temporarily from the phone and display an exclamation mark or a progress percentage. Do not interrupt an active installation just because of those indicators. Samsung says the process may take several minutes, but does not define a universal wait time or percentage at which an update should be considered stuck. Samsung’s boot-loop and update guidance describes these normal update behaviors.
2. Check the connection and retry the update
If the update appears stalled rather than merely slow, confirm that the phone has a network connection and that Bluetooth is enabled and the watch remains connected to the phone. Samsung’s phone-based update instructions call for both a network connection and a Bluetooth connection between the watch and phone. Menu names can differ by model and software version.
Update from Galaxy Wearable
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the connected phone.
- Open the watch’s software update area. Depending on the version, this may be labeled Watch settings > Watch software update or similarly.
- Choose the available update option and follow the on-screen prompts. Keep the phone connected to a network and paired to the watch while the update runs.
Update from the watch
- On the watch, open Settings > Software update.
- Tap Download and install, if that option is available, and follow the prompts.
Samsung documents both update routes, but does not say that either one is universally faster or more reliable. If a menu path is missing, use the labels available on your model. See Samsung UK’s update instructions or Samsung US’s watch update guidance.

3. Restart the watch, then check for the update again
Samsung recommends restarting the watch when update problems occur. After it restarts, reconnect it to the phone if necessary and check the update again through Galaxy Wearable or the watch’s Settings > Software update menu.
On supported watches, Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions describe holding the Home/Power and Back keys until Rebooting… appears. Button behavior and labels vary by model; follow the instructions for your watch if this combination does not apply. Samsung’s watch troubleshooting guidance covers restarting an unresponsive watch.

4. Treat app removal or a factory reset as later recovery steps
A failed update can leave a watch in a boot loop. Samsung identifies uninstalling apps or performing a factory reset as possible recovery measures in that situation. A reset removes watch data, so back up the watch where possible before proceeding. After a reset, set up and reconnect the watch, then check for the update again. Use the recovery instructions for your particular model rather than assuming every watch has the same reset menus. Samsung’s boot-loop guidance discusses these options.

If physical damage prevents the watch from restarting, Samsung advises seeking service rather than continuing to attempt software recovery. Its regional support guidance notes that troubleshooting menus and available options vary by watch model and software version.
