SmartThings, Apple Home, and Google Home all support Matter, but Matter does not guarantee that every device category, feature, or setup works identically across them. Check compatibility for your exact devices and the automations you want before buying a hub or adding accessories.
How to choose between SmartThings, Apple Home, and Google Home
Start with your household’s existing phones and smart-home devices, then confirm whether the platform supports the specific device models, categories, and functions you want. The official documentation establishes platform availability and setup requirements, but it does not provide a comparable scored user-experience test across the three options.
- List your devices. Record each model and the protocols it uses. Consult the platform’s compatibility information for those exact products.
- Identify the automations you need. Matter certification alone does not show that each platform exposes every device feature or automation.
- Check the controller and network requirements. Find out whether your setup needs a compatible hub, a Thread border router, or both—and whether you already own suitable equipment.
- Consider the household’s phones and voice interfaces. Favor a platform that fits how people in your home already interact with their devices.
What Matter does—and does not—make compatible
Matter is designed to improve interoperability: a Matter device may be controlled in more than one certified smart-home platform. But practical compatibility still depends on the platform, device category, device model, and setup. Google Home and Nest Help cautions that “All Matter-certified smart home platforms and apps update to support different Matter-enabled device types and categories at different times.” Google’s Matter setup guidance is therefore a useful place to check current category support.
For each device, verify both that the platform supports its category and that it supports the particular functions you care about. A shared Matter logo is not proof of feature parity between SmartThings, Apple Home, and Google Home.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Platform differences that affect your decision
SmartThings
SmartThings documents Matter setup using a compatible controller and commissioner. Its supported controller hubs include specified Samsung SmartThings hubs and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub; some older hubs received firmware support. Model, firmware, and Thread requirements vary, so check the current SmartThings Matter integration guidance before relying on a hub you already own. SmartThings also notes that device packaging can indicate whether a controller needs a Thread border router.
SmartThings is worth considering when your devices or protocols depend on compatible SmartThings hub hardware. That does not establish that it supports more devices overall: there is no comparable, current supported-device total here for all three platforms.

Apple Home
Apple documents Matter support in iOS 16.1 and later. Its developer information describes Matter as a connectivity standard intended to help accessories work across platforms, and lists support across Apple operating systems. This makes Apple Home a Matter-capable option for Apple households, but it does not establish that every Matter device category has the same features in Apple Home or settle every home-hub configuration. See Apple’s Matter support information and verify the requirements for the accessories and functions you plan to use.
Google Home
Google says Matter devices communicate over the home network and requires a compatible Google Home hub to be set up in the app for Matter. If your home combines Thread and Wi-Fi devices, Google specifies that the hub must also be a Thread border router. Consult Google Home and Nest Help’s Matter setup instructions to check hub and category requirements for your setup.

When you need a hub or Thread border router
Do not assume that choosing a platform means you must buy a new hub. First check the requirements for your device mix and whether equipment you already own fills the controller role. A Matter controller and a Thread border router are distinct capabilities: a setup involving Thread devices may need the latter as well as a compatible controller. Read the device’s packaging and the platform’s current setup instructions, then confirm support for the exact hub model and firmware.
A compatible SmartThings hub, such as the Aeotec Smart Home Hub named in SmartThings’ documentation, is a candidate only when your devices or setup need SmartThings hub capability and your existing equipment does not already provide it. Verify the model, protocol support, and regional availability before purchasing.

Which platform should you use?
- Choose SmartThings if your specific devices or protocols call for compatible SmartThings hub hardware and the documented requirements match your setup.
- Choose Apple Home if Apple Home fits your household’s devices and the particular Matter accessories and features you need are supported.
- Choose Google Home if it fits your household and you can meet its compatible-hub requirements, including a Thread border router for a mixed Thread and Wi-Fi setup.
In all three cases, confirm current device-category and model compatibility before buying. Platform support and setup prerequisites can change, and Matter does not remove those differences.
