On iPhone and iPad, open Settings > Apps > TV. Streaming and downloads each have their own controls, and you can switch off cellular use for each one separately. Labels differ by platform, and Apple says the options you see depend on your device.
Where to find the settings on each device
iPhone and iPad
Open the Settings app, then go to Apps > TV. Apple documents the options in its Apple TV app settings guide for iPhone and iPad.
- Streaming over Wi-Fi: choose High Quality or Data Saver.
- Streaming over cellular: turn Use Cellular Data off to limit streaming to Wi-Fi. If it is on, choose High Quality or Automatic.
- Downloads: cellular access can be turned off separately. Cellular and Wi-Fi downloads each offer High Quality or Fast Downloads.
Mac
In the Apple TV app, choose TV > Settings > Playback. According to Apple’s Mac guide, High Quality (Up to 4K) streams the highest-quality video, including HDR when available. Data Saver streams the best available quality at the lowest file size. Download options are High Quality (up to 1080p), Fast Downloads, and Most Compatible HD (1080p).
Windows
In the Apple TV app, open the sidebar actions, choose Settings, then Playback. Apple’s Windows guide lists Data Saver and High Quality (Up to 4K) for streaming. Download choices include High Quality (up to 1080p), Fast Downloads, and Most Compatible formats in HD or SD.

Android
Apple’s Android guide describes toggles for cellular streaming and downloads. Streaming offers High Quality or Automatic on cellular, and High Quality or Data Saver on Wi-Fi. Apple says the automatic cellular setting optimizes quality based on your data plan. Fast Downloads give a smaller, lower-quality file that uses less storage.
What each streaming option does

Apple does not publish a GB-per-hour figure for each setting, and actual usage varies by stream and device, so treat any such numbers from elsewhere as estimates.

How to stop the Apple TV app using cellular data
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > TV.
- Under streaming, turn Use Cellular Data off.
- Under downloads, turn off cellular access as well. It is a separate switch, so disabling one does not disable the other.
If you must stream on mobile, choose Automatic rather than High Quality to keep consumption in check.
Downloading with less data
Download settings are independent of streaming settings. On iPhone and iPad, Fast Downloads trades quality for a smaller, quicker download. High Quality downloads use more data and take longer. Each extra audio language you include also increases the download size, so download only the languages you need. On Mac and Windows, choose Fast Downloads for size, or Most Compatible if the file has to play on a wider range of devices and displays.

Which setting should you choose?
- Fast home Wi-Fi, no data cap: High Quality.
- Capped broadband or shared, congested Wi-Fi: Data Saver.
- Limited mobile plan: turn cellular off, or use Automatic.
- Saving storage or downloading before a trip: Fast Downloads, with minimal extra audio languages.
If playback is poor
Apple’s troubleshooting article says: “Streaming HD content requires 8 Mbit/s or faster.” That is Apple Support’s published guidance, not a guarantee that every stream arrives in HD. Apple’s other suggestions:
- Check whether other people on your network are slowing it down.
- Try Wi-Fi if your mobile service is weak.
- Restart the device or streaming hardware.
- Try a download where available.
None of this needs new hardware. Settings can change with app and operating-system updates, and Apple notes that the options shown depend on your device, so your menu may differ slightly from the labels above.

It streams the best available quality at the lowest file size, so picture quality can be lower than High Quality in exchange for less data.
