What Gemini can do on an Android phone
Google documents calling through the Phone app in the Gemini mobile app on Android. You can ask Gemini to call a saved contact, a particular saved number, a phone number, a business or organization, or voicemail. You can also ask for a business mentioned earlier in the conversation. Google’s examples include “Can you call [phone number]?” and “Call the closest [cuisine] restaurant.” These are examples from Google, not a guarantee that every request will work in every location or language. Requirements
- An Android phone or tablet with an active mobile plan.
- Contact information saved on devices signed in to the account.
- Phone app permission for the Google app.
- The Gemini mobile app in chat mode. Phone calling is not available through Gemini in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or Live chats.
Which phone app Gemini uses
Gemini places calls through the device’s default phone app. Google says it usually uses the last app it used to call that contact. If Gemini does not choose Phone, include “@Phone” in the request and connect the app if prompted. To change the default, go to Android’s Settings > Apps > Default apps and choose the phone app you want to use; labels can vary by Android version and device.
Calling while the phone is locked
Calling without unlocking depends on your setup. In Gemini’s lock-screen settings, enable Allow calls and messages without unlocking if the option is available and you want to use it. Do not assume Gemini can place a locked-screen call unless this setting and the device configuration allow it.

What Google Assistant can still do
Gemini is not a one-for-one replacement for every Assistant action. Google says some familiar actions it does not support may still be handled with help from Assistant, and recommends switching to Assistant when a feature you rely on is unavailable in Gemini. Some quick voice actions and other Assistant-powered features may also remain available when Gemini is the primary mobile assistant. Availability varies by language, country, account, and device. Calls from speakers and smart displays
Google Assistant can place calls to friends, family, and businesses from supported speakers, smart displays, and Pixel Tablet, but those devices cannot receive incoming phone calls. Google’s current speaker and display guidance supports phone calls on most such devices in the US and Canada; it says phone calls are not currently supported on those devices in other countries. The same page notes that, as of February 2024, Assistant no longer supports calling a smart speaker or display from another Assistant-enabled device. Availability, account limits, and safety
Google lists Phone as a Connected App for the Gemini mobile app on Android in chat mode, for locations and languages where Gemini mobile is supported. That broad listing does not guarantee every call action for every user: the detailed Phone requirements still apply. Google says the Gemini mobile app is available in more than 150 countries, while noting that supported actions depend on language, device, account, and location. - Some features, including “Hey Google” and certain Assistant features, are not available in all languages or countries.
- Supervised accounts may not have all features. Some work or school accounts also lack Assistant-powered features such as quick voice actions.
- Connected Apps are unavailable while Gemini is performing features powered directly by Assistant.
- Google explicitly says not to use Gemini’s Phone app for emergency services. For an emergency, use the device’s calling app directly.
Which one should you use?
- Use Gemini when you want to place an ordinary call from an Android phone with a natural-language request and its required setup is available.
- Use Google Assistant when a familiar Assistant action is not supported in Gemini, or when you want to call from a supported speaker or display in the US or Canada.
- Use the Phone app directly for emergency calls, and whenever you need to answer or reject an incoming call rather than place one.
