Google Play Books has separate controls for downloads, account sync, saved activity, and messages—there is no single privacy or battery switch. On Android, you can restrict new downloads to Wi-Fi, turn off Books sync on a device, review Google Play History, and opt out of promotional emails. These settings can reduce particular network activity or saved records, but Google does not publish a measured battery-life improvement for changing them.
How to make Play Books downloads Wi-Fi-only
To avoid downloading new books over mobile data, open Google Play Books, go to its settings, and enable the Wi-Fi-only download option. Google documents this control for Android. The exact menu wording or placement may vary by app version.
Play Books also offers an option to save new books to an SD card on supported devices. Availability and storage behavior depend on the device. Titles downloaded to the device can be read offline. See Google’s instructions for reading books offline on Android.
How to stop Play Books from syncing on an Android device
If you do not need a particular device to keep its Play Books account data in sync, use Android’s account sync controls:

- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Tap Accounts (the name may vary by device), then select the Google account you use for Play Books.
- Open account sync settings and turn off Google Play Books.
This is a device-level sync control, not a way to delete your library or remove Google Account activity. With Books sync off, library changes or access may not stay current across your devices. Google says book downloads are typically allowed on three to five devices, depending on the publisher; most textbooks are limited to one device. See Google Play Books troubleshooting and sync guidance.
How to limit saved Play activity and personalization
Google Account privacy settings and Google Play History govern saved activity; they are distinct from the app’s download and sync settings. Google Play History can be turned off or configured to auto-delete. Google says this history may include Play activity and app usage. Its help page also clarifies that acquired Play content is not part of Play History and remains recorded so you can access it.

Turning off or deleting Play History reduces or removes specified saved activity; it does not erase records of acquired content or mean Google stops all data collection and processing. For broader controls, review Google’s Privacy Policy, including Web & App Activity and ad settings, and the Google Play History controls. Google’s Privacy Policy, effective October 1, 2026, says generally: “We collect information about the apps, browsers, and devices you use to access Google services, which helps us provide features like automatic product updates and dimming your screen if your battery runs low.” That statement concerns Google services broadly; it does not say Play Books activity causes battery drain or dims a device.
How to stop promotional Play Books emails
To change optional promotional email preferences, open Google Play email settings and adjust the offers and content-partner messages you want to receive. This applies to email, not push notifications. Google says service announcements and mandatory transactional messages—such as receipts and order updates—may still arrive. Follow Google’s instructions for changing Google Play email settings.

How to stop Play Books notifications
Notification controls are less consistently documented than the download, sync, and email options. Google Play Community answers have described an in-app route through Play Books settings to notifications, but the labels and availability may differ by version. Check the current app’s notification settings. If you need to block notifications at the device level, open Android Settings, find the app’s notification controls, and turn off the notifications you do not want; Android menu names vary by device and version.
Promotional email preferences do not necessarily control app notifications. Google’s general app-data disclosures also do not establish which notification categories appear in every Play Books version. The Google Play listing describes features such as offline reading, reading customization, and notes syncing with Google Drive; its Data safety section reflects information provided by the developer, not an independent audit. See Google’s explanation of the Play Data safety section and the Google Play Books listing.

Will turning off sync save battery?
It may reduce syncing on that device, and Wi-Fi-only downloads prevent new book downloads over mobile data, but Google’s cited guidance does not quantify battery savings for either change. Results depend on device use and other factors, so treat these as controls for syncing and download behavior—not guaranteed battery-life fixes. Google’s general Privacy Policy statement about device and service information is not a Play Books battery measurement.
