“Googlebooks” is shorthand for Google Play Books, Google’s ebook reading app and web library. Setup takes a few minutes: sign in with the Google account that holds your books, open one, and run a short test of reading, uploads, annotations and offline access. This guide covers each test in order and says what to expect. It is for readers, not publishers. Publishers distribute books through a separate service, Google Play Books Partner Center, which you don’t need.
What you need before you start
- A Google account, the same one used to buy, rent or upload your books.
- An Android phone or tablet with the Play Books app, or a computer with a browser. Google’s help documents the app for Android phones and tablets, so you don’t need to buy new hardware.
- A sample PDF or EPUB file if you want to test personal uploads.
- A Wi-Fi connection, which you will switch off for the offline test.
Step 1: Open your library
On Android, install or open Google Play Books and check that the profile shown is the account you expect. If a purchase is missing, the account is the first thing to check. On a computer, open the Google Play Books library in your browser and sign in with the same account.
Step 2: Test reading and display options
- Open any book from your library.
- Swipe to turn pages.
- Tap the center of the page to reveal the controls.
- Open the contents and jump to a chapter.
- Open the display options and try font, text size, line spacing, brightness and background, where the title offers them.
Original pages vs. flowing text
Some titles offer both modes and others only one. Original pages keep the publisher’s fixed layout. Flowing text lets you adjust font, size and spacing. If the display controls seem to do nothing, the book is probably fixed-layout only. That’s a property of the title, not a fault in the app.
Step 3: Upload PDF and EPUB files to your library
On a computer
- Open the Play Books library.
- Choose Your books, then Upload files.
- Select a PDF or EPUB.
On Android
- In Play Books settings, enable PDF uploading. This is only needed for PDFs.
- Save the file on the device, then open it with Play Books or upload it.
- For an EPUB received by email, you can upload it directly without changing the PDF setting.
Success looks like this: the file appears in your library and also on other devices signed in to the same account.

Step 4: Test bookmarks, highlights and notes
- Add a bookmark on a page.
- Select a passage of text and highlight it.
- Attach a note to the highlight.
- Open the annotations view to find and edit what you saved.
Annotations are available for most books, not all. Publishers control whether you can copy text. On a computer, annotations can be saved to Google Drive or exported.
Step 5: Test offline reading
- While online, download an ebook to the device.
- Turn on airplane mode or disable Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Open the book. It should open and let you read and turn pages.
A title you didn’t download won’t open offline. Publishers set download limits per device. Google says most books typically allow downloads on 3–5 devices, while many textbooks allow only one device at a time.

Exporting a book
Google also documents exporting to EPUB or PDF on a computer, where the title allows it. If you get an ASCM file, you need Adobe Digital Editions to read the exported EPUB or PDF. Google’s export page is older than its upload and annotation guidance, so check the current options in your library before you rely on it.

- Confirm Play Books is signed in to the Google account that bought or rented the title.
- If a download fails, you may have reached the publisher’s device limit. Remove the download from another device and retry.
- For an uploaded file, check that the PDF setting is enabled on Android, or try the upload from a computer.
Menus and publisher restrictions change, so labels may differ slightly on your device.
