If a book will not download, open, or sync, start by checking that Play Books is using the Google account that owns it; then check your connection and app update before removing and downloading that book again. The steps below are based mainly on Google’s Android help instructions, so menu names and paths may differ on iPhone, iPad, or the web.
Set up Play Books with your own PDF or EPUB files
Google Play Books supports personal PDF and EPUB uploads. On Android, you can open a downloaded file from Files or Downloads and choose Play Books; uploaded books appear under Library > Uploads. Google documents the following routes:
- PDF on Android: In Play Books settings, enable PDF uploading first. Then download the PDF, open it in Files or Downloads, and choose Open with Play Books or Upload to Play Books.
- EPUB or PDF by email: Email the file to yourself and choose Upload to Play Books from the attachment. Google says the PDF-upload setting is not required for an EPUB sent this way.
Google says bookmarks, highlights, and notes work across devices for PDFs uploaded after January 20, 2026. See Google’s upload instructions for details.
Fix a book that will not download, open, or load a page
Try these steps in order on Android. Removing a book’s download is different from removing its title from your library; choose the option that removes the downloaded copy, not the library item.

- Confirm the device has a working Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
- Update Google Play Books from the Play Store.
- In your library, remove the affected book’s download, then download it again.
- On the Play Books homepage, pull down to reload the app.
- If the problem remains, remove your Google account from the device, then add it again and sign in. You will need your sign-in details.
Google notes that work- or school-managed accounts may have organizational settings that prevent books from loading. Contact your administrator if that applies. These Android steps are documented in Google’s loading troubleshooting guide; they are not confirmed here as the exact procedure for every platform.
Find a missing purchase, rental, or library book
First check the account selected in Play Books. A purchase or rental will not appear if the app is signed into a different Google account than the one used to obtain it. To check whether you own a title, open its Play Store listing: Google says Read indicates ownership, while Buy means the title still needs to be purchased.

For a missing textbook rental, sign in to the account used for the rental and update Play Books. Google’s library and download troubleshooting covers these cases.
Resolve a “device limit reached” message
Google says a book can typically be downloaded on 3–5 devices, but the publisher sets the limit; most textbooks are limited to one device at a time. The limit applies across device types and operating systems, so switching from Android to another platform does not necessarily free a slot.

- Remove the book’s download from a device you no longer use.
- On devices you rarely use, consider turning off Books sync.
Google’s range is typical, not a guaranteed allowance for every title. See its device-limit guidance.
Download books for offline reading and manage storage
Open the title in your Play Books library and download it; check that the downloaded icon appears before relying on offline access. Downloads use device storage. You can enable Wi-Fi-only downloads to avoid using mobile data.

On supported Android devices, Play Books settings can direct new book downloads to an SD card. Check that the card has enough free space. Google says that if Play Books cannot download to the card, it saves the book to internal storage instead. Changing the setting does not move earlier downloads: remove those downloads and download the books again to store them under the new setting. Google’s offline-reading instructions also say manga chapters are not available for offline reading.

If a page or section is genuinely absent, the download may be incomplete. Remove the downloaded copy, reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, and download the title again.

A different page count is not necessarily missing content. Most ebooks reflow to fit the screen, and changing font size or line spacing can change pagination; page numbers may repeat or the displayed total may differ from the book details. Google explains this distinction in its troubleshooting guidance.
Fix a yellow or unusually warm page display
Check the app’s reading display options for Night Light first. If the page remains yellow, look at Android’s Night Light or Dark theme settings. Samsung devices may also apply Dark/Night mode, Blue light filter, Reading mode, or Adaptive display settings. Depending on the device software, try removing Play Books from Reading mode or changing Adaptive display from Vivid to Natural. Menu paths vary by device; Google lists these checks in its display troubleshooting instructions.
Troubleshoot an audiobook that stops or has no sound
- Check that media volume is turned up and not muted.
- If playback stops unexpectedly, free up device storage and download the audiobook again; Google identifies insufficient storage as a possible cause.
- Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or Chromecast and retry playback on the device itself to check whether audio routing is involved.

When the problem persists
Check whether the same title works on another device signed into the same account. If it does, the issue may be specific to the original device, its connection, storage, or display settings; if it does not, recheck the account and title availability. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a Google-prescribed test. If Google’s documented steps do not resolve the issue, contact Google Play Books support. For a work- or school-managed account, ask the organization’s administrator about restrictions.
