You can summarize a Drive file, ask questions about its contents, or analyze a selected set of files using Gemini without leaving Google Drive. Open Ask Gemini from a file or folder, or start a conversation in Drive and choose sources. Access requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, and the exact features can vary by Drive surface and account.
Start a Gemini conversation in Google Drive
- Go to drive.google.com on the web and sign in to an eligible account.
- To focus on a particular item, select a file or folder and click Ask Gemini. The selected item provides context for your request.
- For a broader question, open the Ask Gemini control without first selecting an item, then add the relevant sources in the sources panel.
Gemini in Drive can answer questions about files and provide summaries or analysis. Google also documents natural-language search and AI Overviews for finding Drive content; availability depends on the account and feature. See Google’s Drive search and retrieval guidance.
Choose the right source scope
For a precise answer, decide whether Gemini should use one file, a folder, a selected group of files, or a wider set of Workspace sources. Add or remove sources in the sources panel, and name the files or source set in your prompt when useful. You can also use @ mentions to focus a request on specific sources.
In Google’s research-and-analysis workflow, a new conversation has Drive, Gmail, Chat, and Calendar search enabled by default, while web search is off by default. Review the available source settings rather than assuming a conversation is limited to Drive. Google explains the controls in its research and analysis guide.

Ask for a useful summary or analysis
State the output you need, the scope, and any criteria that matter. A specific prompt makes it easier to assess whether the response answers the right question.
- Summarize one file: “Summarize the key points in the project brief. Separate decisions from open questions.”
- Extract actions: “List the action items in these meeting notes, including the owner and due date when stated.”
- Find risks across updates: “Identify the top three risks mentioned across the Q2 operational updates. Cite the source document for each point.”
- Compare files: “Compare the Q3 budget forecast sheet with the Q4 projected-spend presentations. List material differences and identify the source for each.”
The risk-identification and budget-comparison examples are prompts Google provides in its Drive research and analysis documentation. For your own work, replace the example periods and file descriptions with the correct ones.

Check citations before relying on the answer
Gemini can provide citations or links to relevant source files. Open them and verify important names, dates, figures, decisions, and qualifications in the original documents. Google cautions that Gemini may omit a source it used or cite a document that was not directly used for a particular point, so a citation is a way to inspect the evidence, not proof that every claim is correctly attributed. Understand file and folder limits
Drive capabilities are not identical in every surface. Google’s summary guidance covers Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, videos, and images, but notes that a folder summary might not include every file and that the described folder-summary feature analyzes one folder at a time. If completeness matters, check the relevant files individually or narrow your request to a set you can verify. Details are in Google’s file summary guidance.

Google’s separate file-viewer guidance specifically describes summarizing and asking questions about PDFs and videos, with source links. Do not assume a feature documented for the viewer works the same way for every file type or entry point. See the Drive file-viewer guidance.

If you expect to return to the same research, use a Drive project to preserve a set of sources for multiple conversations. Google says projects are created on the web. Sharing a project does not grant collaborators permission to its underlying files: anyone who lacks access to a source file cannot view or reference its contents in the Gemini conversation. Review Google’s project and source-sharing guidance before relying on a shared project.
