The earbuds are just the listening output; the timer is controlled by the phone or media app. On iPhone, use Clock’s Stop Playing option. On Android, use a timer in the audio or video app, such as Spotify or YouTube.
Set an iPhone timer to stop playback
The iPhone Clock app can stop audio or video playback when its timer ends. A regular countdown is not enough: you must choose Stop Playing as the timer’s ending action.
- Open Clock and tap Timers.
- Set how long you want playback to continue.
- Tap When Timer Ends.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Stop Playing.
- Tap Set, then tap Start.
Apple says the timer continues if you open another app or the iPhone goes to sleep. This setting stops playback rather than sounding an alarm. It also remains selected for later timers, so change When Timer Ends back to a sound if you want a future timer to alert you. Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains the timer behavior and setup.
Use Spotify’s sleep timer on iPhone or Android
Choose Spotify’s timer when you want Spotify playback to stop without setting a device-wide timer. Open the playback menu (for music, tap the three-dot menu), scroll to Sleep Timer, and select a duration. Spotify lists 5, 10, 15, 30, or 45 minutes, 1 hour, or End of track. The timer controls Spotify playback, not necessarily other apps playing on your device. Spotify notes that cross-device timer control was updated in 2025.

Set a sleep timer for a YouTube video
YouTube’s mobile sleep timer pauses the video after the duration you choose. Open the video, tap Settings in the player, tap Sleep timer, then choose how long to wait. This is a video pause timer, rather than a general phone timer.

What about Google Clock’s Bedtime feature?
Google Clock includes a Bedtime feature and sleep sounds, but current Google Clock help does not document a universal timer setup sequence. Spotify described an integration in 2020 that let users select sleep audio in Clock’s Bedtime tab and set a stop timer. Because that information is dated and device behavior can vary, check the options in the Clock app on your phone rather than assuming the feature is available or works the same way on every Android device.

If the earbuds keep playing
- On iPhone: confirm that Stop Playing, not an alarm sound, is selected under When Timer Ends.
- For an app timer: make sure you started the timer in the same app that is playing the audio or video. Spotify’s and YouTube’s controls are app-specific.
- On Android: look for a timer in the media app first. The available evidence supports app-specific timers, not one universal Android Clock setting that stops playback everywhere.
- For Google Clock: check the options on your particular phone; the current help information does not confirm a consistent timer path across devices.
