To stop receiving iOS beta updates, turn off Beta Updates in Settings. That does not remove the beta already installed. To return to the current public iOS release immediately, Apple’s procedure is to erase and restore the iPhone with a computer. Before choosing that route, consider whether you have a backup made before installing beta software.
Choose the right way to leave the beta

Apple says, “To remove the iOS or iPadOS beta and install the current publicly released version of iOS or iPadOS, you will need to erase and restore your device.” See Apple Support’s instructions for uninstalling beta software.
Turn off future beta updates
iOS 16.4 or later
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Select Off.
This opts the iPhone out of future beta updates; it does not downgrade the version currently installed.
iOS 16.3.1 or earlier
- Open Settings and tap General.
- Tap VPN & Device Management.
- Select the iOS Beta Software Profile.
- Tap Remove Profile and follow the prompts.

Return to public iOS immediately with a computer
This process erases the iPhone. Apple’s procedure uses a computer running current macOS or the Apple Devices app, a connection cable compatible with both devices, and recovery mode.
- Back up or otherwise preserve anything you need before proceeding. Review the backup compatibility guidance below.
- On a Mac, use current macOS; on a Windows PC, use Apple Devices. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible cable.
- Put the iPhone into recovery mode. The button sequence depends on the iPhone model; follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions linked from its beta removal guide.
- When the computer offers the choice, select Restore, not Update, and follow the prompts. The restore erases the device and installs the current publicly released iOS version.
- After the restore completes, set up the iPhone and choose a compatible backup if you have one.
Check backup compatibility before erasing
A backup made while the iPhone is running beta software may not restore to an earlier public iOS version. Apple recommends using an archived backup from before the beta installation. Its example says a backup made on iOS 18.2 beta will not restore to iOS 18.1; those versions are an illustration of the compatibility issue, not a claim about the current release. This warning concerns restoring a device backup to an earlier iOS version; it does not establish that every item synced separately to iCloud or another service will be lost. Check that important data is synced or otherwise saved before erasing.
