Skydance’s biggest expansion is now complete: Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) closed on October 6, 2026. The combined company controls two major Hollywood studios, a broad set of streaming services and entertainment libraries, and the CNN and CBS News organizations. It also faces a large debt burden, complex integration work and unresolved questions about jobs, consumer choice and news independence.
How Skydance and Paramount became one company
There were two separate transactions, not one. Skydance and Paramount became subsidiaries of Paramount Skydance Corporation on August 7, 2025. Paramount’s acquisition of WBD closed more than a year later, on October 6, 2026, according to the Associated Press (AP).
AP reported the WBD transaction at $81 billion excluding debt and nearly $111 billion including debt. Those are measures of the transaction, not an estimate of the combined company’s net debt after closing.
What does Skydance own now?
With WBD under Paramount Skydance Corporation, the portfolio spans studios, streaming services, television networks and news organizations. The brands and franchises below illustrate that reach; their inclusion does not mean every title is available on every service.

Common ownership brings these properties into one corporate group; it does not by itself establish how they will be managed, distributed or combined.
Will Paramount+ and HBO Max become one streaming service?
AP reported that Skydance planned to unify its streaming products into a single service over time. As of the October 2026 reporting, the service’s name, launch date, consumer price and effect on choice were not established. David Ellison said, “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO,” describing an approach in which content could reach a broader audience through the platforms. That is a stated strategy, not confirmation that a unified product has launched or that the services will retain their current arrangements.

The combined streaming portfolio’s reported share depends on what is being measured. AP cited JustWatch for a 14% U.S. streaming-market share for Paramount+ and HBO Max together. Separately, Nielsen data reported by AP put Paramount and WBD at 11.8% of total U.S. TV viewing in July 2026—6.5% for Paramount and 5.3% for WBD. Streaming-market share and total-TV-viewing share are different measures and should not be compared as if they describe the same market.
How much debt did the acquisition add?
The transaction value and the company’s estimated debt are distinct figures. AP reported that Morningstar estimated net debt following the WBD acquisition at around $80 billion. That is an attributed estimate, not an audited company figure, and it is not the same as the nearly $111 billion transaction value including debt.

The two revenue figures use different bases: one is Skydance’s post-acquisition figure and the other is FactSet’s total for the 12 months ended in June. They should not be treated as directly comparable or as evidence of a contradiction. AP’s October 2026 figures are snapshots; financing and integration could change the company’s position.
What challenges does the combined company face?
Managing debt while integrating the businesses
A large estimated debt load adds pressure as the company combines operations and tries to realize cost savings. The challenge is not just financing: it must coordinate studios, streaming products, networks and libraries while competing in a media market undergoing change. Expected savings are not proof that integration will be smooth or that particular financial targets will be reached.

Cost reductions, jobs and creative decisions
Regulatory filings discussed in AP coverage indicated plans to reduce costs, including through layoffs and downsizing overlapping operations. Industry participants and critics also raised concerns about job losses and which creative projects might receive funding. These are anticipated plans and expressed concerns, not confirmation that specific cuts have occurred or that particular projects will be canceled.
Competition and consumer choice
Bringing two studios and their streaming portfolios together concentrates more content and distribution assets in one company. A future service consolidation could change how subscribers access that content, but the reported plan did not establish its price, name, timing or consumer benefit. The company’s commitments to theatrical releases and U.S. production spending are described below; they do not establish audience demand or box-office success.

Editorial independence and ownership influence
Common ownership of CNN and CBS News has prompted scrutiny, including over the Ellison family’s relationship with President Donald Trump. Ellison said CNN’s editorial independence would be maintained. The September settlement with states also called for a “News Editorial Independence Board.” These are a stated assurance and a settlement provision, respectively—not independent evidence of how either newsroom will operate in practice.
AP also reported that the FCC approved indirect Gulf sovereign-fund ownership that could reach nearly 50% of equity interests, without voting rights, and approved a request allowing for potential future investment up to 100%. Critics raised concerns about possible influence. The approved investment potential and the criticism do not establish that the maximum investment has occurred or that it has directed editorial decisions.

AP reported settlement-related commitments by Skydance to release 30 theatrical films annually for the first two years, followed by 32 annually for the next three years. The terms described by AP require only half of those films to be produced or jointly produced by the combined company. Skydance also committed to at least $1.5 billion in additional U.S. film-production spending over five years. These are commitments reported in connection with the settlement, not evidence that each film will be successful or that the spending will eliminate concerns about employment or creative choices.
What is still unknown?
The ownership and transaction timeline are established as of the October 6, 2026 closing, but important effects remain unsettled. The cited reporting does not establish the unified streaming product’s name, timing, price or impact on subscribers; the scale and timing of workforce reductions; or how the company’s news-independence commitments will work in day-to-day editorial practice. The debt and revenue figures also have different sources and bases, so they should be read with their stated qualifications rather than treated as one definitive measure of post-merger performance.
David Ellison called the closing “a historic day, not just for Skydance but for our entire industry.” Actor Sally Field opposed the deal, saying “unique storytelling matters” and “we can’t let those voices be silenced, or compromised or merged.” These statements capture contrasting views of the merger; neither predicts its results.
