Use Google Search Console for a quick country breakdown or a focused comparison between two countries. Choose Looker Studio when you need a repeatable, shareable report, want to combine Search Console with other data, or need site-level and URL-level impressions side by side. The tools report Search Console data in different ways: Looker Studio does not recover data Google does not expose, and its Site Impression and URL Impression sources use distinct aggregations.

How should you choose between Search Console and Looker Studio?

Reporting need Start with Why
Check clicks, impressions, CTR, or average position by country Search Console Performance report Country is a native dimension, and the report supports country filters and comparisons.
Compare one country with another quickly Search Console The report has a country comparison workflow, though only one comparison can be active at a time.
Build a reusable report for stakeholders Looker Studio Its Search Console connector supplies a data source for charts and controls.
Show both site-level and URL-level impression views Looker Studio with two Search Console sources Each source uses one aggregation table; use a Site Impression source and a URL Impression source in the same report.
Combine search performance with other business reporting Looker Studio It can include other sources such as Google Analytics and Google Ads.

This is a workflow choice, not evidence that one tool is universally more accurate. Search Console is the simpler starting point for a one-off investigation; Looker Studio is better suited to composed, repeatable presentations.

How do you compare Search Console performance by country?

In Search Console, open the property’s Performance report. Its table can show clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position grouped by country. The country dimension refers to the country where the search originated; it is not a city, state, province, or language dimension. See Google’s Performance report guidance and Search Console data definitions.

  1. Open the property’s Performance report.
  2. Choose the metric or metrics you want to examine, such as clicks, impressions, CTR, or average position.
  3. Use the Country table dimension to inspect results by country, or add a country filter to narrow the report.
  4. To compare countries, use the report’s comparison control and choose the countries. The selection lists countries for which the property has data.

Google’s documentation describes the task as comparing top query performance in two countries. A comparison is useful for a direct market-to-market check, but the report permits only one comparison at a time. If you add a country comparison while comparing dates, the country comparison replaces the date comparison. Filters are separate controls, so filters across dimensions can still be combined. Details are in Google’s Performance report documentation and its comparison guidance.

When does Looker Studio make more sense?

Looker Studio is useful when the same country view needs to be refreshed and shared regularly, when stakeholders need a tailored presentation, or when search data belongs alongside other business measures. Google’s connector makes Search Console data available to report charts; Google also describes combining Search Console reporting with sources such as Analytics and Ads. See the Search Console connector guide and Google’s overview of Search Console reporting in Data Studio.

Connect a Search Console property

  1. In Looker Studio, select the Search Console connector and choose the property.
  2. Select either Site Impression or URL Impression as the table type.
  3. Choose a search type supported by that table type.
  4. Set the data-source credentials to match the report’s intended access and governance.

You need at least view permission on the Search Console property. If the property does not appear in the connector’s selection list, check that Looker Studio and Search Console are using the same Google Account. The connector documents owner, viewer, and service account credentials; the choice affects who can access the data through the source. Confirm the current setup details in Google’s connector documentation.

Use separate sources for the two impression views

A Search Console connector source uses one table type. Site Impression and URL Impression are different aggregations, so do not treat their totals as interchangeable. To display both, create one source for each table type and add them to the same report. Google’s instruction is: “To see your site impressions and URL impressions side by side, create two data sources and add both to a single report.” Google Search Console connector guide.

Supported search types are not identical across the two table types. Site Impression supports web, image, video, and news; URL Impression also supports Discover and Google News. Check the connector guide when configuring a report, since supported options can change.

What limits affect country reports in either tool?

  • Country is the available geographic scope described here. The dimension groups by the country where the search originated; it does not provide city or subnational breakdowns.
  • Query rows are not a complete query inventory. Search Console omits some anonymized queries for privacy. Those queries can still contribute to totals, and displayed rows may be truncated. Do not interpret the visible query list as every query that generated performance.
  • Recent data can be preliminary. Search Console’s newest values may change. Its guidance says dates are in Pacific Time outside the 24-hour view, which matters when defining reporting periods for international teams.
  • Looker Studio cannot restore unexposed data. It is a reporting layer over connector data, not a way around Search Console’s visibility limits.

For data definitions and caveats, consult Google’s Search Console data documentation and its report date and comparison guidance.

A practical reporting decision

  • For a quick answer about which countries generate clicks or impressions, use the Search Console Performance report.
  • For a saved, shareable country report or one that combines search data with other business metrics, build it in Looker Studio.
  • If the report needs both property-wide and page-level impression views, create separate Site Impression and URL Impression sources and label their measures clearly.
  • When sharing a Looker Studio report, check source credentials and make date boundaries explicit for the audience.
