Opening an .md file in Google Docs lets you work with the Markdown file; it does not convert it into a native Google Docs file. To turn copied Markdown into formatted content in a Doc, use Paste from Markdown.
Choose the right Markdown workflow
| What you want | Use this workflow | What happens |
|---|---|---|
View or collaborate on a Markdown file while keeping it as .md |
Open the file in Docs, or view its preview in Drive | The file remains Markdown; it is not converted into a Google Docs file. Google Docs Editors Help |
| Convert Markdown source into formatted content in a Google Doc | Copy the Markdown source and use Paste from Markdown in a Doc | Google says this converts the Markdown to Docs content. Google Docs Editors Help |
Open an .md file without converting it
In Docs, go to File > Open > Upload and select the Markdown file. Alternatively, upload the file to Drive and choose Open with > Google Docs. Google’s native Markdown-file workflow keeps the file as .md; opening it in Docs is not the same as creating a native Docs document. Google Docs Editors Help
Convert copied Markdown into a Google Doc
- Copy the Markdown source text.
- Open the Google Docs document where you want the converted content.
- Right-click where the content should go and choose Paste from Markdown.
- Review the result, especially headings, lists, and tables that matter to your document.
If the command is missing, check Tools > Preferences > Enable Markdown. Google’s 2024 announcement said the Copy as Markdown and Paste from Markdown commands were off by default and could be enabled in preferences; check your current interface rather than assuming those rollout settings still apply. Fix common Markdown formatting problems
Markdown punctuation appears literally
If text such as **bold** or # Heading appears with its markers, ordinary paste may have inserted the source rather than converted it. Paste the source with Paste from Markdown. If that option is unavailable, enable Markdown under Tools > Preferences and try again. Google Docs Editors Help

The file still shows an .md label
That is expected when you opened the Markdown file directly. Google says the native Markdown workflow does not convert the file to a Google Docs file. To create a Doc containing converted text, use the copy-and-Paste from Markdown workflow instead. Google Docs Editors Help
Headings are plain text or missing from the outline
Google’s Markdown instructions specify that a heading begins at the start of a paragraph, uses one to six number signs, and has a space between the signs and the heading text. For example, ## Section title is a level-two heading. If Docs does not recognize a line as a heading, select it and apply a heading style from the style menu; Docs uses heading styles to build the document outline. Tables do not arrive as expected
Google’s Help instructions give examples of supported formatting but do not provide a complete compatibility list for Markdown table syntax. Inspect the result rather than assuming every table will convert correctly. To repair it, use Insert > Table and Docs’ table controls to rebuild the structure or adjust rows and columns. Colors, highlights, alignment, chips, or HTML formatting changed
Google warns that some Docs features can change when editing an .MD file. Its documented examples include smart chips becoming text or links, web formatting (HTML) becoming plain text, and font colors, highlights, and text alignment being removed. To restore an earlier version, use File > Version history. Google Docs Editors Help

What to expect from newer native Markdown support
Google’s October 5, 2026 Workspace update announced native viewing, editing, and collaboration on Markdown files in Docs, with rendered Markdown previews in Drive. Google said the rollout began October 5 for Rapid and Scheduled Release domains and that no end-user setting is required. This native file experience is distinct from converting text into a Google Docs file: the Markdown file remains .md. Because rollout has only recently begun, availability may vary while it reaches accounts; consult Google’s rollout guidance if the feature is not visible in your interface. When built-in conversion is not enough
Google does not publish a complete compatibility matrix for every Markdown dialect or extension in its Help instructions. If your document relies on complex tables or other syntax, inspect the converted result and repair it with Docs formatting controls instead of assuming universal support.
