The feature covers specific formatting—not every Docs element—and some formatting can change or disappear when content is represented as Markdown.
What Google Docs supports in Markdown
Google’s documented Markdown formatting includes italics, bold, strikethrough, links, and headings through level six. In Docs, turn Markdown formatting on or off at Tools > Preferences. The supported syntax described by Google includes:
*italic*or_italic_for italics**bold**or__bold__for bold- Three matching markers for bold italics, such as
***bold italic*** ~strikethrough~for strikethrough- One to six
#characters followed by a space at the start of a paragraph for headings [link text](URL)for a link
These are the formats Google lists; support for them does not guarantee that every Markdown extension, Docs object, or formatting detail will transfer cleanly. See Google’s Markdown formatting and workflow instructions.
Choose the workflow that matches your task

How collaboration works on an .md file
Google says you can share Markdown files from Docs and work with others using sharing and comments. Google describes the file relationship directly: “Important: Your file does not convert to a Google Docs file. It stays as an .md file, kept in Drive. Google Docs is an editor where you can see the final format and work with others.” — Google Docs Editors Help, with no individual speaker or publication date listed.
Docs also has general comment tools for adding, editing, replying to, filtering, and deleting comments, as well as assigning tasks and action items. Those are general Docs collaboration capabilities; they should not be taken as a guarantee that every comment, task, or Docs feature is encoded in the Markdown text itself. Google says comments and formatting can be kept when reopening an .md file in Docs or other tools, while also listing specific formatting losses described below.

What may change or disappear
Markdown represents content differently from a fully formatted Docs document. Google warns that some Docs features may not carry over as they appear in the original:
- Smart chips can change to plain text or links.
- HTML formatting becomes plain text.
- Font colours, highlights, and text alignment are removed.
If a conversion changes the document in a way you need to undo, Google points to Version history as a way to restore the original. For documents that depend on the listed formatting, retain the original and review the Markdown version before sharing it as a substitute.

Which route should you use?
- Use Paste from Markdown when you have Markdown text and want to bring its supported formatting into an existing Doc.
- Use Copy as Markdown when you want a selected passage from Docs in Markdown syntax for another application.
- Download as Markdown when you need a portable
.mdfile from a Google Doc. - Open the .md file in Docs when you want to edit or collaborate while keeping the file’s Markdown type in Drive.
- Keep a Docs version in view when smart chips, HTML formatting, colours, highlights, or alignment matter, because Google says those elements can change or be removed in Markdown.
