Before setting up a new Apple device, make a fresh backup of the device you use now, choose how you’ll transfer your data, and keep the old device available until you’ve checked the new one. If you plan to sell, give away, or trade in the old iPhone or iPad, transfer first and erase it only after setup is complete.
1. Get your current device ready
Confirm account access
Make sure you know the Apple Account credentials you use on the current device and can access the trusted verification methods associated with it. Setup and restoring a backup can require you to sign in. If your trusted phone number is changing, Apple recommends adding another trusted number before you lose access to the old one. See Apple’s steps for preparing an iPhone or iPad for sale, gifting, or trade-in.
Make and check a fresh backup
Back up before starting a transfer. Apple supports backups to iCloud and to a computer; check that the backup has completed before relying on it. The available route and screens depend on your device and software. Apple explains how to restore from an iCloud or computer backup and how to transfer using Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.
If you use a computer backup and want to preserve Health and Activity data from an iOS device or Apple Watch, make the backup encrypted. Apple says an unencrypted computer backup won’t transfer that data. Keep the backup password somewhere you can retrieve it; you’ll need it to restore an encrypted backup. Apple’s Mac backup guidance describes computer-backup encryption.

Don’t clean up by deleting synced files
Avoid manually deleting contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, or photos from the old device while it is signed in to iCloud. Deleting synced content can also remove it from iCloud and other connected devices. If you need to make space, do not treat deletion from the old device as a safe substitute for checking what is backed up or synced.
2. Choose a transfer route
The right route depends on what you have ready: a nearby eligible device, a usable backup, account access, and—if restoring from a computer—whether Health and Activity history matters to you.

| Route | What it needs | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Start | An eligible new iPhone or iPad and your previous device nearby. Wireless Quick Start uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; Apple also documents an optional wired transfer route, for which cable compatibility depends on the device pair. | You want to set up directly from the previous device without first restoring a computer backup. |
| Restore from iCloud | The relevant iCloud backup and access to the Apple Account used for it. | You have an iCloud backup available and do not need to use a computer backup. |
| Restore from a computer | A computer backup, using Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes depending on the computer and software. Use encryption if you need to transfer Health and Activity data. | You already made a computer backup or prefer to restore from one. |
Apple’s Quick Start instructions cover proximity, power, and transfer options. For an overview of setup choices, see Apple’s iPhone setup guide. Quick Start and restore details can vary by device and software, so follow the instructions shown for your particular pair.
Plan for time and power
For Quick Start, keep the devices close and connected to power until migration finishes. Apple’s instruction is: “Keep your devices near each other and plugged in to power until the data migration process is complete.” The transfer may take longer depending on the amount of data and network conditions; don’t count on a fixed completion time. A wired cable is optional, not a requirement for wireless Quick Start.

- Complete the selected transfer. For Quick Start, keep both devices nearby and powered. For a backup restore, select the relevant iCloud or computer backup and sign in as prompted.
- Check important data before handing off the old device. Confirm that the information you depend on is present on the new device, including any Health and Activity history you expected to transfer. Keep the previous device until you’ve completed these checks.
4. Prepare the old device for sale, a gift, or trade-in
Do this only after transfer and verification. Apple’s pre-handoff checklist applies to iPhone and iPad; trade-in instructions can add steps depending on the device and location.
