Kubernetes orchestration helps decide where workloads run and restores desired infrastructure state; application reliability must also account for state, dependencies, recovery decisions, and the user-visible result.
Why infrastructure recovery is not the same as application availability
Modern delivery can automate deployment while production recovery still depends on someone investigating an alert, understanding undocumented dependencies, and deciding what to do next. That gap matters most when the person who knows the system is unavailable or an incident crosses several layers at once.
In a DevOps.com article published October 6, 2026, Don Boxley—CEO and co-founder of DH2i, according to his author page—frames the distinction this way: “Orchestration answers the question, ‘Where should this workload run?’” He contrasts it with reliability: “How do I keep this workload available when something inevitably fails?” These are Boxley’s explanatory statements, not formal definitions from Kubernetes maintainers or a standards body. Read Boxley’s article; see his DevOps.com author page.
Kubernetes can restart pods, replace nodes, and reconcile desired state, but those operations alone do not prove that a customer can sign in, submit an order, or complete another essential task. A component may be running while an application dependency is failing or its data is inaccessible. Conversely, an infrastructure change need not mean service loss if the workload and its dependencies recover as intended.

Follow the workload through its dependencies
A recovery design should trace the path from the user’s important action through the application and the services it relies on. Depending on the workload, that can include stateful application components, databases, storage, networking, and other application dependencies. Restoring one container or node is only one possible part of restoring that path.
Start by identifying what must be available for the service to deliver value, where state lives, which components depend on others, and which failures could interrupt the user’s task. The Cloud Security Alliance’s AICMv1.1 implementation guidance recommends identifying dependencies and single points of failure as part of resilience planning. Its guidance is not an outcome study and does not establish that one architecture or recovery design fits every service. See the CSA implementation guidelines.

Measure restored user outcomes, not just restarts
Infrastructure indicators remain useful for diagnosing incidents, but they should sit alongside measures that show whether the application has recovered. Choose indicators tied to the service’s critical user task or business outcome, then monitor them during and after recovery.
- User-visible function: Can users perform the essential action, such as completing a transaction?
- Application recovery time: How long until the application is usable again, rather than merely until a pod or node restarts?
- Human intervention: How many decisions or manual steps were needed to restore service, and which depended on knowledge held by only one person?
- Dependency recovery: Did the database, storage, network, and other required services recover in a way that restored the application’s function?
There is no evidence in the cited sources for a general rate of manual recovery, typical recovery duration, or guaranteed uptime improvement from a particular approach. Boxley’s late-night incident scenario is an illustration, not a measured statistic; the CSA guidance offers implementation recommendations rather than results from an outcome study.

Make recovery repeatable without automating every judgment
Teams can reduce avoidable improvisation by recording what happens during incidents, testing known recovery procedures, and turning decisions that are both defined and validated into policy or automation. Automation should follow an understood and approved recovery path—not substitute for one that has never been tested. Keep human review for cases where the safe action is unknown or the consequences of an automated choice are unclear.
- Inventory incident work. Review production incidents and list the manual steps, decisions, and specialist knowledge involved. Flag recovery knowledge held by a single person.
- Define the success condition. Specify the application or business indicator that demonstrates the user’s important task works again.
- Map the recovery path. Document critical assets, state, dependencies, failure points, and the order in which recovery actions must occur.
- Exercise the procedure safely. Run controlled, periodic recovery tests appropriate to the service. Validate that the intended outcome is restored and record what failed or required intervention.
- Codify tested decisions. Put repeatable, approved choices into policy and automation. Retain a human path for new, ambiguous, or unsafe scenarios.
- Improve after exercises and incidents. Update the dependency map, procedures, indicators, and automation when testing or real failures reveal a gap.
These steps reflect the CSA guidance on periodic exercises, recovery validation, dependency identification, and continuous improvement, alongside Boxley’s argument for automating decisions already defined through policy and testing.

Plan capacity around workload demand and service needs
Resilience also depends on having resources suited to the workload. Capacity planning, monitoring, and scaling strategies should respond to workload demand and the service’s performance requirements. A system can recover its components yet still fail users if it lacks the capacity to serve them under the conditions the service is expected to handle.
The CSA guidance recommends workload-based capacity planning and scaling, with availability commitments aligned to service requirements. That does not imply that every service needs multi-region deployment or fully autonomous remediation. The appropriate resilience level depends on service criticality and what the organization needs to deliver.

How to assess a recovery approach
When evaluating a process, platform capability, or testing tool, compare it against the workload’s needs rather than treating a feature list as proof of availability. Useful questions include:
- Does it measure whether the user-visible outcome is restored?
- Does it cover the application’s state and dependencies, not only orchestration components?
- Which failure scenarios can it test or recover from, and are those relevant to this service?
- Can recovery choices be expressed as policy and repeated consistently?
- Can tests be run with suitable safety controls, and do they validate the recovery workflow?
- Which decisions still require human intervention, and is that boundary clear?
- Can capacity and scaling meet workload demand and the service’s performance requirements?
- Is the level of resilience proportionate to the service’s criticality?
These are assessment criteria, not a ranking of products. Deliberate resilience testing can help validate recovery procedures; tool selection should consider safety controls, supported environments, scenario coverage, and integration with recovery workflows.
