The iPhone Duo and Motorola razr ultra (2026) are foldables with fundamentally different designs: Apple’s phone opens sideways like a small book, while Motorola’s folds vertically like a traditional flip phone. That choice determines whether you want a larger unfolded workspace or a compact phone with a screen on the outside. Apple had announced the Duo but had not yet begun sales as of October 7, 2026, so this is a comparison of announced specifications—not a hands-on verdict.
How their designs change everyday use
iPhone Duo: a book-style foldable
Apple’s first foldable iPhone opens sideways to reveal its 7.6-inch inner display. This format is aimed at people who want more room for reading, viewing content, or working with apps on a single unfolded screen. The 5.4-inch outer display is available when the phone is closed. Apple describes the two displays as sharing an aspect ratio. Apple announced the design and display details.
razr ultra: a clamshell flip phone
Motorola’s razr ultra folds vertically. Its 7.0-inch inner screen opens into a tall smartphone display, while the 4.0-inch external screen remains accessible when the phone is folded. That smaller outside display makes the closed phone usable without opening it, though it is not the same-sized workspace as the inner screen. Motorola lists both displays at up to 165Hz. Motorola’s US product page lists the display specifications.
Display size, features, and what the numbers cannot tell you
| Display feature | iPhone Duo | Motorola razr ultra (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Inner display | 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR; ProMotion, Always On, and up to 3000 nits peak outdoor brightness, according to Apple | 7.0-inch Extreme AMOLED HDR10+; up to 165Hz, according to Motorola |
| Outer display | 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR | 4.0-inch external display; up to 165Hz, according to Motorola |
| Additional display claims | Apple says a nano-texture finish is intended to minimize glare and crease visibility | Motorola specifies HDR10+ for the inner display |
The stated diagonal sizes do not establish which screen will feel better. Aspect ratio, brightness in real conditions, app layouts, and how software handles the transition between folded and unfolded states all affect the experience. Apple’s brightness and finish descriptions are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements of glare or crease visibility.

Software and multitasking
The book-style design gives the Duo a larger inner screen by the diagonal figures Apple and Motorola publish, but those figures alone do not show how effectively apps use the space. The available specifications do not establish a matched comparison of multitasking features, app behavior, or continuity when opening and closing either phone. Those questions require retail software testing rather than an inference from screen size.
Apple says USB-C Apple Pencil support is planned for later in 2026. That is an announced future feature, not a capability to assume is available at launch. Apple’s announcement gives the timing.

Cameras: hardware claims, not image-quality results
Apple’s iPhone Duo product page lists a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera with up to 8x optical-quality zoom. These are stated specifications; they do not demonstrate how photos or video compare with Motorola’s in real use. The cited Motorola product information does not provide a directly comparable, independently tested camera result. Apple’s product page lists its camera specifications.
Battery and charging
Motorola lists a 5000mAh silicon-carbon battery and advertises up to 36 hours of battery life based on a mixed-use profile under optimal network conditions. It also says users can get up to 12 hours of battery life in about eight minutes under specified conditions. These are Motorola estimates, not independent results or a direct comparison with the Duo. The manufacturer lists wired TurboPower charging up to 68W and wireless charging up to 30W; the 68W charger is sold separately. Motorola provides its battery and charging qualifications.

Durability, repair, and the questions still open
The available product information does not establish which phone has better long-term hinge reliability, ordinary-use crease visibility, repairability, or overall durability. Apple says the Duo’s nano-texture finish is intended to minimize crease visibility; that is a design claim, not an independent assessment. Motorola’s US page offers optional Moto Care accidental-damage coverage, subject to market and purchase eligibility, but that does not prove the hardware is more or less durable. Check local coverage terms before relying on it.
Camera quality, performance, real-world battery endurance, and long-term reliability also remain untested in a matched comparison. The Duo was not yet available for retail purchase as of October 7, 2026, so a direct verdict on those outcomes would be premature.

Which foldable fits your priorities?
- Consider the iPhone Duo if you want a book-style phone with a larger stated inner display and prefer Apple’s announced display features. Its US launch was scheduled for October 23, 2026.
- Consider the razr ultra if you prefer a vertically folding clamshell and want a 4.0-inch external display for use while the phone is closed. Motorola’s listed battery and charging figures are manufacturer claims, not comparative test results.
- Wait for matched testing if your decision depends on camera results, battery life, crease visibility, performance, or hinge durability. Specifications alone cannot settle those comparisons.
