For most advertisers, start with sitelinks, callouts, and structured snippets. Then add assets that match what you want customers to do: call, submit a lead, visit a location, compare prices, or act on a promotion. Google now calls extensions “assets”; they can make an ad more useful, but they are eligible additions—not guaranteed placements.

What Google Ads extensions are—and how they appear

Google Ads uses the term assets for components that can add links, details, calls, images, or location information to an ad. The older term “extensions” remains familiar, but assets is the current product terminology. See Google’s overview of assets.

Adding an asset makes an ad eligible to show it; it does not guarantee that it will appear on every impression. Google selects from eligible assets and predicts which combinations may help performance in a particular search. Use relevant, accurate information and review what actually performs in your account rather than assuming that every asset—or every recommendation—will benefit every campaign.

Which assets should you start with?

Sitelinks: send people to useful pages

Sitelinks add links to distinct pages, such as product categories, business hours, or contact information. They are useful when different searchers may need different destinations rather than one general landing page. Keep each destination relevant and current. Google says having at least four sitelinks may make them more likely to show; that is guidance, not a display guarantee. Read Google’s sitelink guidance.

Callouts: state factual benefits

Callouts add brief, non-clickable details such as free shipping or support availability. Use them for factual benefits that are not already stated in the ad or repeated in sitelinks. Google recommends at least four; up to four may show at a time, depending on available space. See Google’s asset recommendations.

Structured snippets: show the range you offer

Structured snippets preview a defined range of products or services under a predefined header. Choose a header that accurately describes your offerings and provide at least four relevant values. Snippets are informational, not clickable. They work best when the range itself helps a searcher decide whether your business is a fit. See Google’s structured-snippet guidance.

Choose other assets by the action you want

Asset Best fit Practical guidance
Call Customers who are ready to speak with your business. Compare call outcomes with website-click outcomes, and track calls as conversions so you can assess their value.
Lead form Prospects who can submit contact details directly from the ad. If lead quality is a concern, consider qualifying questions. Set clear expectations about the form experience when volume is the priority.
Price Searchers comparing specific products or services. Google describes up to eight cards, a minimum of three items, and recommends five or more. Match each item to the search and link to an appropriate landing page. See Google’s price-asset guidance.
Location Local discovery or visits to a business location. Use accurate business-location information so address, map, or distance details can help people find you.
Promotion A relevant offer that runs for a limited time. Keep the offer terms and dates accurate for the promotion.
Image Campaigns where a visual adds useful context. Use when it supports the business and campaign; it is not a universal default.
App Businesses seeking app downloads. Use when an app download is a meaningful action for the campaign.

Google’s asset guidance covers these options and advises advertisers to use types that make sense for their business. For call and lead form assets, the right choice depends on the conversion path: prioritize calls when a conversation is valuable, and forms when collecting contact details directly is useful.

A practical way to choose and maintain assets

  1. Start with the landing pages and actions that matter. Identify the pages customers need and the outcomes the business values.
  2. Add sitelinks for distinct destinations. Link to useful, current pages rather than sending every searcher to the same general page.
  3. Use callouts and snippets for different jobs. Callouts state concise factual benefits; snippets describe a genuine product or service range.
  4. Match conversion assets to customer intent. Choose calls, lead forms, prices, or locations when those options support the action a searcher is likely to take.
  5. Keep every detail accurate and distinct. Check landing pages, offer terms, locations, and ad copy; avoid repeating the same message across assets.
  6. Review account-level results. Compare outcomes that matter to your business and adjust assets based on performance in your account, not a general average or recommendation alone.

The suggested counts—four or more sitelinks, four or more callouts, and at least four structured-snippet values—are Google’s recommendations to improve usefulness or the likelihood of display. They do not ensure that assets will appear. Google’s overview of dynamic structured snippet assets also explains that some snippets may be generated dynamically; review what is eligible and shown for your ads.

How to interpret performance claims

Google Ads Help reports that advertisers who improve Responsive Search Ad and Sitelink Ad Strength from “Poor” to “Excellent” see 15% more conversions on average. The surfaced help page does not state a year. The figure describes a combined Ad Strength change, so it does not establish that sitelinks alone cause a 15% increase or predict results for an individual account.
