Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with a correctly configured GA4 property, install the right measurement code, and verify that data is arriving before you interpret reports. Then use overview reports to orient yourself, choose the acquisition report that matches your question, and add custom event tracking only when the standard collection does not capture an action you need.
1. Set up the right Analytics property and data stream
Choose an existing Google Analytics account or create one, then create a GA4 property for the website or app you want to measure. During property setup, select the reporting time zone and currency deliberately. Google records activity according to the property’s configured time zone, so an incorrect setting can affect how activity is grouped by date. See Google’s setup guide.
Add a data stream for each source you intend to measure: a web stream for a website, or an iOS or Android stream for an app. For a web stream, enhanced measurement can automatically collect page views and other events; Google says you can disable its events individually later.
2. Install measurement before drawing conclusions
For a website, Google documents several routes: a supported CMS integration, adding the Google tag directly to pages, or using Google Tag Manager. If you add the tag manually, place it immediately after the opening <head> tag. If you do not have access to your site’s HTML, ask the person who manages it to install the tag. For an app, follow the Firebase SDK setup flow and use the appropriate app stream. The setup options are described in Google’s Analytics setup instructions.

Check that collection has started
Google says data collection may take up to 30 minutes to begin. Check the Realtime report for incoming activity; Google says data appears there and then in other reports shortly after Analytics starts receiving it. An empty report immediately after installation is not, by itself, proof that setup failed. See Google’s reports overview.
3. Use overview reports to orient, detail reports to investigate
An overview report summarizes a topic; a detail report lets you examine an area more deeply. Google defines an overview report as “a type of report in Google Analytics that summarizes data about a topic.” The Reports snapshot and Realtime report are useful starting points, while report collections and available reports can vary with property setup. In a detail report, charts and a table let you inspect dimensions and metrics together. See Google’s report documentation.

Treat the report list as a starting point, not a fixed menu that must answer every question. If a prepared report lacks the breakdown you need, an Editor or Administrator can create a detail report from a blank layout or template and customize its dimensions, metrics, filters, and charts. Google explains the process in its detail report guide.
4. Choose acquisition reports by the question you are asking
User acquisition and Traffic acquisition answer related but different questions. User acquisition is user-scoped: use it to understand how new users first found your site or app. Traffic acquisition is session-scoped: use it to see how sessions are sourced, including later visits by people already known to the property. Because the scopes differ, a returning visitor’s later session can be attributed differently in the two reports. Choose based on whether you are investigating first-time discovery or session sources, rather than expecting the reports to match. Google’s explanation is in its acquisition report guide.

5. Track meaningful actions with events
Begin with the collection available for your setup, including the events collected through web enhanced measurement where applicable. Add custom event tracking when you need to measure an action that is not captured in the way you need. Google documents event setup using either gtag.js on the page or a GA4 Event tag and trigger in Google Tag Manager. A trigger controls when the event is sent; for example, it can be configured around a button-label condition. Preview Tag Manager changes before publishing so you can inspect what will be recorded. Follow Google’s event setup instructions.
6. Make comparisons answer one specific question
Before comparing performance, set a date range and decide what you want the comparison to show: a change over time, a difference between relevant groups, or the source of a particular outcome. Then select dimensions and metrics that directly address that question. A report with many unrelated breakdowns can obscure the point; a focused comparison is easier to interpret.
