Google’s guidance now defines a page’s “main content” as anything that directly helps it achieve its purpose—not just its paragraphs. That can include a calculator, product images, forum contributions, reviews, or tabbed specifications when those elements are central to what the page is meant to do. The change clarifies Google’s quality guidance; it is not an announcement of a new ranking update.
What Google means by “main content”
Google Search Central defines main content as “any part of the web page that directly helps the page achieve its purpose.” The purpose of the page determines what belongs in that category.
For an article, the main content may be its explanation, illustrations, or video. For a service page, it could include a calculator or another interactive tool. On a product page, useful reviews, images, and specifications may be central. A forum page may rely on relevant contributions from its members; a safety resource might put key guidance in tabbed sections. Page titles and headings can also contribute when they help visitors understand and use the page.
This is a functional definition, not a preferred format. A feature is not valuable main content simply because it exists: it needs to help the page fulfill the purpose a visitor came for.

Four qualities Google says raters assess
Google says its Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines treat main-content quality as a critical consideration in assessing page quality. Raters consider whether the content enables the page to meet its purpose and provides a satisfying experience. Google identifies four relevant qualities:
Effort
Effort means the human work and care behind the content. Google contrasts original analysis, manual translation, and a custom interactive map with large volumes of automatically generated material that receive little oversight or curation. Attribution by itself does not replace original effort.

Originality
Originality asks whether a page contributes information or perspectives that are not readily available elsewhere. A summary of existing material may help readers, but merely repeating others’ work without adding value does not make the content distinctive.
Talent or skill
Skill may show up in clear writing, polished production, a well-built tool, or the expertise needed to deliver a satisfying experience. Google also notes that specialized expertise is not required for every useful topic: everyday experience can be valuable where it fits the subject.

Accuracy
Informational content should be factually correct. Where a topic can substantially affect people’s lives or well-being, Google calls for a high standard of accuracy consistent with expert consensus.
These are quality dimensions, not a mechanical SEO checklist, disclosed scoring formula, or ranking threshold. Google says E-E-A-T is not itself a specific ranking factor; trust is the most important component, while experience, expertise, and authority can matter differently depending on the topic. Search raters do not control rankings, and their ratings are not used directly in ranking algorithms.

What the guidance means for authorship and production
Google encourages accurate authorship information and bylines where readers would expect them. A fabricated author profile, false credentials, fake name, or deceptively AI-generated headshot can undermine trust. Identify authors honestly and do not imply qualifications or experience they do not have.
Google also says explaining how content was produced can help readers. For example, a product review can describe how many products were tested, what the results were, and how the testing was conducted, with supporting evidence such as photographs. Only make those claims when the work actually happened; never present unperformed testing or first-hand experience as fact.

How to apply the guidance to a page
- State the page’s purpose. Describe in one sentence what a visitor should be able to learn, decide, or do after using it.
- Identify the elements that serve that purpose. Include all relevant formats—text, media, tools, reviews, contributions, or specifications—not only the prose.
- Check the substance. Ask whether the content shows care, contributes something original, demonstrates appropriate skill, and is accurate for the topic’s stakes.
- Check how it earns trust. Use honest bylines and credentials, and explain methods when that context would help readers judge the content.
- Rework what does not serve visitors. Improve, remove, or clearly separate material that distracts from the page’s purpose or exists mainly to attract search traffic.
Google frames the most important self-check as “why”: content should primarily be made to help people and be useful to someone who arrives directly at the site. SEO can support that goal by helping search engines discover and understand people-first content. Google warns against publishing mainly to capture search traffic, producing large volumes of unrelated or automatically generated material, summarizing others without added value, or choosing topics only because they are trending.
What changed—and what did not
Search Engine Journal’s October 7, 2026 report by Marie Haynes describes the documentation edit, including Google’s explicit definition of main content and its quality attributes. Haynes also offers editorial advice, such as placing the primary answer or tool near the start of a page. That is her practical interpretation, not a Google requirement.
Haynes speculates that a significant core update may be coming. The official guidance and historical announcement discussed here do not confirm a new 2026 core update tied to this documentation change. A clarification to documentation is not, on its own, evidence that Google announced a ranking update.
For context, Google’s August 18, 2022 announcement described the original Helpful Content update as a new automated, machine-learning classifier and site-wide signal among many ranking signals. At launch, Google said rollout would begin the following week, initially affect English searches globally, and could take up to two weeks. It also said the classifier ran continuously and that the signal could stop applying if unhelpful content did not return over the long term. Those statements describe the 2022 launch, not a complete account of Google’s current systems.
Google’s launch-era aim was to reward content that left visitors satisfied, while content that failed to meet expectations would not perform as well. Danny Sullivan, Google’s Public Liaison for Search, also said people do not find content helpful when it seems designed to attract clicks rather than inform readers. The current practical implication is to judge each page by whether its actual main content delivers on its purpose—not to infer a new ranking formula from the documentation edit.
