Google has not announced a general redesign or replacement of Search Console’s standard country filter. Country remains a geographic reporting dimension. Recent announcements instead add country reporting to Search Generative AI performance reports and describe an experimental AI configuration that can apply country filters. A separate 2026 update adds a multimodal search-type filter; it is not a country-filter change.
What “country filter update” refers to
The phrase can point to several distinct Search Console features, but Google’s announcements do not identify a released change specifically called a country-filter update. The standard country dimension breaks down performance data by geography; it is a way to analyze reporting, not a signal that Google changed a site’s rankings. Country reporting in Search Generative AI reports
Google Search Central announced dedicated Search and Discover views for visibility in generative AI features on June 3, 2026. The announcement lists countries as a reporting breakdown, alongside impressions and pages, and says rollout to all websites worldwide was complete as of August 31, 2026. This adds geographic reporting in those dedicated views; it does not say the existing country dimension in standard Performance reporting was redesigned. AI-powered configuration can set a country filter
In a December 4, 2025 announcement, Google described an experimental natural-language feature for configuring the Search results Performance report. It can set filters, comparisons, and metrics, including country filters. Google said availability was limited during the rollout announcement, so the feature should not be assumed to appear in every account. Because an AI interpretation may not match the request, check the suggested configuration before using its results. The multimodal update is a separate search-type control
Google’s September 24, 2026 announcement adds a multimodal search type filter for searches involving Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search, and Chrome’s right-click “Search this image” feature. The announcement says its global rollout begins that day and that metrics are visible for sites receiving this traffic. This control concerns how a search happened, not which country to report. It does not establish a change to the standard country filter. Details are in Google’s multimodal Search performance reporting announcement.
How to interpret country performance data
A country breakdown describes reported performance associated with a geographic dimension; it does not by itself explain why performance differs or establish that rankings were changed. Search Console performance data also has privacy and reporting constraints. In an October 19, 2022 explanation, Google said anonymized queries can be omitted from tables while remaining included in chart totals, except when a query filter is applied. The same dated explanation described row limits for certain exports and APIs. Because those details can change, consult current Search Console help documentation before relying on a specific limit or using a country report as a complete inventory of activity. What to check if you expected a new filter
- If you mean geographic analysis in an existing Performance report, country is a documented dimension; Google’s cited announcements do not say it has been replaced or generally overhauled.
- If you mean country reporting for generative AI visibility, look for the dedicated Search and Discover performance views described in Google’s June 2026 announcement.
- If you mean a natural-language way to configure a report, the AI-powered configuration was experimental and initially limited in availability; review its proposed filters before analyzing data.
- If you mean Lens or image-based activity, the September 2026 announcement concerns a multimodal search-type filter, not a country filter.
