If AirPlay won’t find or connect to your Apple TV, first make sure both devices are powered on, close to each other, updated, and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Then restart them and check AirPlay receiving and Apple TV access settings. If only one app fails, the app may not support AirPlay; if Apple TV also has internet trouble, troubleshoot its network connection.
Start with the checks that fix common AirPlay problems
- Check power and proximity. Make sure the Apple TV and the iPhone, iPad, or Mac are turned on and near each other.
- Check Wi-Fi. Connect the sender and Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network. A device appearing on a different network may not be available for AirPlay.
- Update software. Check that both devices are running current software available for them.
- Restart both devices. Restart the iPhone, iPad, or Mac and Apple TV, then try AirPlay again.
These are Apple’s recommended first checks in its AirPlay troubleshooting guidance, which is marked September 23, 2025. Settings and labels may vary by software version.
Check how you are trying to use AirPlay
Streaming video from iPhone or iPad
Confirm the iPhone or iPad is on the same Wi-Fi network as Apple TV. In a compatible video app, use its AirPlay control and select the Apple TV. Some video apps do not support AirPlay, so test another compatible app if the TV is available but one app will not stream. Apple’s instructions are in Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror the screen of your iPhone or iPad.
Mirroring an iPhone or iPad screen
Open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and choose Apple TV. If the Apple TV does not appear, go back to the Wi-Fi and discovery checks rather than assuming that an app’s video-streaming support determines whether screen mirroring works.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Using AirPlay from a Mac
Check that AirPlay receiving is allowed on the Mac: open System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff and review the AirPlay Receiver setting. On iPhone, the receiving control is under Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity. These settings matter when the device is acting as an AirPlay receiver; interface labels can vary by operating-system version.
If Apple TV does not appear, check AirPlay access
Apple TV can restrict who may stream to it. Review its AirPlay settings if it is missing for one person or behaves differently for different household members. Available access choices include Everyone, Anyone on the Same Network, Only People Sharing This Home, and Require Password. A Home membership restriction or password requirement can prevent access even when the network connection is working.

If Apple TV requests a password, check the configured AirPlay password and access settings instead of repeatedly retrying. Apple explains the password prompt for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD in If you’re asked to enter an AirPlay password. If Apple TV is configured in the Home app, also review the Home settings that control AirPlay access, as described in Apple’s AirPlay troubleshooting guidance.
When Apple TV has broader Wi-Fi or internet trouble
If other Apple TV network features also fail, troubleshoot the Apple TV’s connection before focusing on AirPlay:

- On Apple TV, open Settings > Network and check its connection status.
- If there is a saved-network or password problem, forget the Wi-Fi network and join it again with the correct password.
- Confirm the modem and router are powered on. Restart Apple TV, then restart the modem and router.
- Improve Apple TV’s placement or reduce physical obstructions between it and the wireless network equipment.
- After reconnecting, check for and install an available tvOS update.
Apple lists these steps in If your Apple TV can’t connect to Wi-Fi. If your model has an Ethernet port, connecting it to the router by Ethernet is an optional way to test whether the Wi-Fi path is involved; Apple TV uses Ethernet automatically when connected. Ethernet is model-dependent and is not a guaranteed AirPlay fix.
“Network Issue” or “No Internet” in Home
If Home reports a “Network Issue” or “No Internet” for Apple TV, restart Apple TV and the modem or router, and make sure Apple TV and iPhone use the same preferred Wi-Fi network. A network that blocks peer-to-peer traffic can also stop Apple TV communicating with other devices. On a school, business, or otherwise managed network, ask the network administrator or internet provider to check its configuration. See Apple’s guidance for Apple TV “Network Issue” or “No Internet” messages.

| Apple TV is missing from the AirPlay list | Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, close by, and turned on; then check AirPlay receiving and Apple TV access restrictions. |
| Apple TV appears, but one app will not stream | Check whether that app supports AirPlay and try its AirPlay control. Do not treat a single-app failure as proof that Apple TV cannot connect. |
| Streaming or mirroring fails for one household member | Review Apple TV’s access choice, Home membership, and any password requirement. |
| Apple TV also cannot use internet-connected features | Check Settings > Network, reconnect Wi-Fi if needed, and restart Apple TV and network equipment. |
