For a tidy setup, separate shows you follow from episodes you save, hide played episodes when they no longer need attention, and enable Sync Library if you want supported library details and playback position on your other devices.
Use Library views to find the right thing
Apple Podcasts separates followed programs from individual episodes and other listening views. On iPhone, open Library and choose the view that matches what you need:
- Shows for programs you follow.
- Saved for episodes you want to return to.
- Downloaded for episodes available offline.
- Latest Episodes for recent releases.
- Stations for themed groupings you create.
- Channels and Categories for those library groupings where available.
This separation helps avoid treating every episode as part of one undifferentiated queue. Apple’s iPhone library guide describes these views and how to organize them.
Follow only shows you want in your library
Following a show adds it to your library and can also affect automatic downloads and notifications. When you follow a show, review the available choices rather than assuming the follow action only changes what appears in Shows. If you no longer want a show there, unfollow it; if prompted, choose whether to keep existing downloads. Apple documents following on iPhone and Mac.

Unfollowing is not the same as canceling a paid subscription. Apple notes that unfollowing a show with a subscription does not itself cancel that subscription; manage the subscription separately.
Make Stations for recurring listening themes
Apple calls its built-in podcast groupings Stations. They are similar to playlists, but are organized around shows you follow and can add episodes from those shows automatically. Use a Station for a recurring context—such as news or a commute—instead of manually assembling the same listening list each time.

- Open Library and go to Stations.
- Create a station and give it a name that identifies its purpose, such as “Commute” or “News.”
- Choose which followed shows to include.
- Adjust how many episodes the station should include, then revisit the selection as your listening changes.
Stations suit topic-based listening; Latest Episodes is better when you want a chronological view of new releases. Apple explains Stations in its library organization instructions.
Control episode order and the played backlog
Episode order, played status, and visibility are separate controls. Change a show’s episode order to suit how you listen, such as starting with the newest or working through episodes in another sequence. Mark an episode—or a group of episodes—played or unplayed to update its status. Hide played episodes to remove them from the view when you no longer need them in front of you.

Marking an episode played does not mean the same thing as hiding it: the first changes its playback status, while the second changes what you see. Use the relevant episode or show controls in the Library; the precise labels and placement can vary by software version.
Keep automatic downloads from taking over storage
Automatic downloads are useful for offline listening, but following shows can enable them. If device space matters, check download settings globally and for individual shows instead of relying on the default behavior.

- Choose whether episodes download automatically, globally or per show.
- Set a limit by episode count or timeframe where offered.
- Choose whether video episodes should download.
- Enable removal of played downloads if you do not need them stored after listening.
Find the available controls under Settings > Apps > Podcasts on supported iPhone software, or open the show’s settings for show-specific options. Apple’s download settings guide covers the choices; menu paths can differ by iOS version.

With Sync Library enabled, Apple says supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account can sync followed shows, channel subscriptions, Stations, and current play position. This is useful when switching between iPhone and Mac, but sync availability and setting locations depend on the device and software generation.

On iPhone, look in Settings > Apps > Podcasts for Sync Library on versions that use the Apps settings layout. On Mac, open Podcasts and use its app settings to locate the sync option. Apple provides device-specific details in its sync guide. Library features and content may vary by region and account.
