Google’s latest update activity could mark the end of the Pixel 6’s scheduled support, but Google has not explicitly confirmed that an October 2026 update is its final patch. Google’s published policy gives the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro five years of operating system and security updates, counted from when each first became available on the Google Store in the US. A beta exclusion and the approaching end of that window point toward support ending; they do not amount to a final-update announcement.
What Google’s support policy says
Google currently promises the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro five years of OS and security updates, measured from their first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Pixel 8 and later have a published seven-year update commitment. These are support-policy periods, not guarantees that every device receives a particular update on the same day; carrier and regional delivery can vary. Google’s Pixel update policy describes the commitments.
| Pixel models | Published OS and security update period | How the period is counted |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro | Five years | From first availability on the Google Store in the US |
| Pixel 8 and later | Seven years | Google’s published support policy |
The Pixel 6a is also in Google’s five-year cohort, but its support timeline is separate from the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro’s.
Why the latest update news raises the question
Android 17 QPR2 beta exclusion is not a final-update notice
On July 20, 2026, Android Authority reported that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were excluded from Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1, interpreting the omission as a sign that their updates were nearing an end. That is a report about access to a beta track—not an explicit statement from Google that stable updates had ended. Android Authority’s report covers the beta exclusion.

The Pixel 6 is listed for Android 17
Google’s Android 17 OTA documentation lists images for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The page lists a June 1, 2026 release date and patch level for the build shown. That establishes Android 17 image availability for those models; it does not establish eligibility for every subsequent beta or an ongoing commitment beyond Google’s stated support period. Google’s Android 17 OTA page lists the device images.
October’s bulletin does not identify a final Pixel 6 patch
Google published its October Pixel Update Bulletin on October 6, 2026. It says devices with patch level 2026-10-05 or later address the bulletin’s listed issues and those in the October Android Security Bulletin, and that supported Google devices will receive that patch level. The bulletin’s recipient wording does not specifically confirm that Pixel 6 received the October update or that it is the model’s final patch. Google’s October Pixel Update Bulletin gives the patch-level information.

What the update records show—and what they do not
Verizon’s update history records a Pixel 6 System Update 53 dated September 15, 2026, with build CP3A.260905.009 and a September security patch level. This is a carrier-specific record, not evidence that every Pixel 6 on every carrier or in every region received the same update. Verizon’s Pixel 6 update history documents that entry.
Taken together, Google’s five-year policy, the Pixel 6’s exclusion from a later beta, and the October bulletin make the end of the published support window a reasonable expectation. But the available official material does not explicitly name an October Pixel 6-specific patch as the final one, nor does it verify delivery to every carrier and region.

What happens when Pixel 6 support ends?
The phone does not stop functioning simply because Google’s published update period ends. The meaningful change is that Google no longer promises scheduled OS and security updates under that support commitment. The available information does not establish that the device becomes immediately unsafe or unusable, and it does not establish that app updates or Google Play system updates stop at the same time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you keep your Pixel 6 or plan to replace it?
Base the decision on how much you rely on ongoing OS and security updates, the phone’s condition, and the cost of replacing it. Google’s policy gives Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro five years of updates, compared with seven years for Pixel 8 and later; that difference is useful when comparing published support windows, but it does not by itself determine which phone is the better value for you.

- Keeping it may suit you if the phone meets your needs and you understand that Google’s published update commitment is reaching its end.
- Planning a replacement may make sense if continued scheduled OS and security updates are important to you. Check the support period for any candidate against Google’s current policy rather than assuming all Pixel generations have the same term.
