Harness, loop, and graph engineering solve different problems in an agent system. The loop runs the model/tool cycle; the harness provides the surrounding runtime, context, tools, state, and policies; and a graph makes a multi-step workflow and its transitions explicit. They are complementary: a graph can coordinate loop-driven agents inside a harness.

What do “agent loop,” “harness,” and “graph” mean?

These terms describe different layers of design, not three mutually exclusive architectures. Their exact meanings vary by vendor and implementation, so treat them as useful working definitions rather than a universal standard.

Approach Main responsibility Good fit Key design question Common risk
Loop-oriented Repeat model and tool turns, then stop correctly. Small, bounded tasks with a straightforward tool cycle. What triggers another turn, and what terminates the run? Unbounded or low-value retries, or state that is hard to inspect.
Harness-oriented Provide context, tools, state, policies, approvals, observability, recovery, and application integration. An agent product that needs reusable runtime capabilities and clear operational controls. What belongs in trusted orchestration, and what belongs in the execution environment? Overbuilding the runtime or leaving the trust boundary unclear.
Graph-oriented Represent stages, branches, transitions, checkpoints, and joins. Long-running or branching work whose progression and recovery need to be explicit. What are the states, edges, transition guards, and recovery paths? Adding workflow machinery to a trivial task.

This comparison is a design synthesis, not a benchmark ranking. The relative implementation cost depends on the workflow and the infrastructure a team already operates.

The loop is the execution cycle

A typical agent loop sends instructions and context to a model, handles a tool request if one is returned, gives the result back to the model, and continues until a stop condition is met. The loop needs defined termination and error behavior: a model response alone does not decide how many retries are acceptable or what to do when a tool fails. OpenAI describes its Agents SDK runner as handling the loop and handoffs; LangChain describes its minimal agent abstraction as an LLM in a tool-calling loop.

The harness is the surrounding runtime

A harness commonly manages the work around that cycle: context assembly, tool routing, run state, handoffs, approvals, traces, recovery, and connections to the application. It is not necessarily the machine or sandbox where commands execute. OpenAI’s Sandbox Agents documentation calls the harness the control plane around the model and distinguishes it from the sandbox execution plane for files and commands. Its architecture documentation also separates the hosted harness, execution environment, and application server.

The graph describes workflow structure

A graph represents a process as nodes and transitions. Nodes can stand for actions such as planning, editing, testing, or review; edges can express what happens next, including branches, joins, and conditions for continuation. LangGraph describes itself as a graph-based runtime for custom workflows with durable execution, fault tolerance, human-in-the-loop control, and observability. A graph can govern movement among stages without replacing the model/tool loop inside a stage or the harness around the overall run.

How do the three layers work together in a software-development pipeline?

Consider an agent pipeline that receives a feature request, edits code, runs tests, and asks a person to review risky changes. A useful division of responsibility is:

  • Graph: define the stages and permitted transitions—for example, route failed tests back to code changes, and route a successful verification to human review.
  • Loop: let an agent perform the bounded work within a stage, such as inspecting files and making an edit through tools.
  • Harness: provide the relevant repository context and tools, preserve run state, record traces, enforce approvals, and connect the agent to the application.

The graph makes progression inspectable; the loop handles repeated model/tool interaction; and the harness supplies the runtime capabilities and boundaries. For a single, short task with one tool, a graph may add little. As stages, branches, approvals, or interruptions become important, explicit workflow structure can make it easier to understand what should happen next and why.

How should you choose an implementation?

Choose according to the control and workflow requirements, not the label. In particular, decide who owns deployment and state, how deterministic the sequence must be, whether work must resume after interruption, how credentials and tools are bounded, what observability and human approval are required, and how much infrastructure the team wants to operate.

  1. Draw the model/tool cycle. Specify what information enters each turn, which tool results return to the model, what ends a run, and how tool errors are handled.
  2. Set operational bounds. Define retry, elapsed-time, tool-call, and cost limits appropriate to the task. Decide what counts as evidence that the work is complete rather than relying only on a confident final response.
  3. Add harness capabilities the application needs. Introduce reusable context management, tools, persistent state, approvals, tracing, recovery, or a controlled execution boundary where those capabilities are needed.
  4. Make the workflow a graph when its structure matters. Model multiple stages, branches, human review, durable resumes, or evidence-gated transitions explicitly so the allowed progression is inspectable.
  5. Keep trust boundaries deliberate. Keep credentials and high-trust controls in the application or trusted orchestration layer, and scope sandbox access to the work it needs. OpenAI notes that putting the harness inside sandbox compute can be convenient for prototypes, but combines orchestration and model-directed execution within one compute boundary.
  6. Evaluate before adding complexity. Measure task success, recovery behavior, latency and cost, operational effort, and human review load on the work you actually run.

Which OpenAI and LangChain options illustrate these choices?

OpenAI: managed API, SDK, or direct Responses API

OpenAI’s Agents API overview presents three starting points: its managed Agents API, an Agents SDK running in the application’s environment, and the lower-level Responses API. The overview compares ownership and integration dimensions including runtime, saved state, tool execution, and execution environment. It says the managed API runs a Codex harness; the SDK runner handles the loop and handoffs; and the Responses API suits direct model calls or building an agent from scratch.

In the application-owned SDK approach, the application server owns deployment, tool implementations, state storage, and approval decisions, while the SDK runs the loop and invokes tools. OpenAI identifies typed TypeScript or Python code, direct control over tools and MCP servers, custom storage, and integration with an existing product as reasons to use the SDK. It points teams toward tracing and evaluation as their workflows grow.

LangChain: Deep Agents, LangChain, and LangGraph

In an August 6, 2026 article, LangChain presents its own stack as three composable layers: Deep Agents as a higher-level harness, LangChain as an agent framework, and LangGraph as a lower-level graph runtime. The article describes Deep Agents as packaging filesystem access, subagents, skills, and memory; LangChain’s core agent as an LLM in a tool-calling loop with middleware hooks; and LangGraph as a durable runtime with human review, fault tolerance, and observability. This is LangChain’s vendor-authored taxonomy, not a naming convention that every provider follows.

What do published project figures and evaluations establish?

OpenAI’s February 11, 2026 account of its internal Codex project reports that, after five months, the repository contained about one million lines of code across application logic, infrastructure, tooling, documentation, and internal developer utilities. It says the repository started with an empty commit in late August 2025. The account also reports roughly 1,500 pull requests opened and merged by a small team of three engineers driving Codex over that period, and average throughput of 3.5 PRs per engineer per day as the team had grown to seven engineers.

Those are figures from one OpenAI project and its own account, not an independent benchmark or proof that a particular harness, loop, or graph design caused the throughput. They illustrate the scale and reported practices of that project; they should not be used as a forecast for another team.

An arXiv preprint posted August 30, 2026, proposes a framework for cloud-engineering agents that combines graph, loop, and zero-trust harness ideas. Its described evaluation set contains 140 natural-language benchmark tasks across 14 cloud-engineering domains, ten tasks per domain. The paper proposes evidence-gated workflow progression and bounded recovery; it is a research proposal and evaluation, not an industry standard or a neutral comparison proving that one architecture is generally more reliable.

What should you avoid assuming?

  • There is no single universally enforced definition of “harness,” “loop engineering,” or “graph engineering.” Check how a particular framework uses the terms.
  • A graph does not automatically make an agent reliable, and a harness does not guarantee productivity gains. The cited materials do not provide a neutral comparative benchmark of the three approaches.
  • More explicit orchestration has costs: it adds integration and policy choices for a harness, or workflow modeling and debugging for a graph. Use those mechanisms where their control and visibility solve real problems.
  • Vendor documentation and framework capabilities can change. Confirm current product behavior in the provider’s documentation before making implementation decisions.
