What’s new in Google Play services v26.39?
Google’s Google System Services Release Notes assign the v26.39 changes to specific platform categories. The main Automotive change concerns manufacturer control over the colors used in Google apps; several other entries apply to phones rather than cars.
- Android Automotive / Auto: OEM Design Tokens let manufacturers customize the color themes of Google apps on Android Automotive.
- Phone / Developer Services: New developer features support Maps-related processes in Google and third-party apps.
- Phone / Developer Services: Users can tap the info icon beside the Google Maps logo to view terms and attribution.
- Auto / Developer Services: Google lists bug fixes for Developer Services-related services, without describing the bugs or fixes.
- Phone / Security & Privacy: NFC lets users tap a tag with a phone to view Find Hub tag details and settings or identify a lost tag. A new registration flow lets users categorize and rename tags and configure features such as Left-Behind Reminders.
- Phone / Wallet: Card art and payment-network logos are supported in card-tokenization prompt notifications.
What are OEM Design Tokens?
Google describes OEM Design Tokens as a way for manufacturers to consistently customize the color themes of Google apps on Android Automotive. In practical terms, the change gives vehicle manufacturers a mechanism to align those apps’ colors with a vehicle’s interface design. Google’s entry does not specify which apps are affected, how manufacturers configure the tokens, or which vehicles will use them.
Is this an Android Auto update?
Not necessarily. Google’s release notes label the theme-customization item “Android Automotive / Auto,” while the separate Android for Cars documentation distinguishes Android Auto from Android Automotive OS. They are not interchangeable labels: Android Auto is a phone-connected experience, while Android Automotive OS is a vehicle platform. The release note’s wording specifically mentions Android Automotive for OEM Design Tokens; it does not say that the feature is coming to every Android Auto vehicle.

Will v26.39 reach my phone or car?
The release notes establish that Google lists these changes for the stated platforms, but they do not identify eligible vehicle or phone models, countries, or a rollout schedule. A listing therefore does not establish that a particular device has the feature already, or that every device in the platform category will receive it. Google also notes on its release-notes page that some features may be experimental or available only to certain users. The v26.39 entry does not provide a manual installation procedure.
Which changes are phone-only?
The Maps developer features and attribution/terms shortcut, Find Hub NFC tag functions, and Wallet notification artwork are categorized as Phone changes. They should not be described as Android Automotive features. The Auto Developer Services entry is separate and only says that it includes bug fixes; Google provides no further detail in this release entry.
