RemoveMacAI is a third-party, open-source command-line tool for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 27 that can disable Apple Intelligence features and ask Apple’s asset service to remove downloaded models. The roughly 12 GB figure is an estimate reported by MacRumors, not a guaranteed recovery: the amount depends on which models are installed, and macOS may take time to delete them.
What RemoveMacAI does—and who it supports
RemoveMacAI uses a configuration profile to disable selected Apple Intelligence features, releases downloaded models through Apple’s asset service, and redirects model downloads to reduce the chance that macOS immediately fetches them again. The project says it does not directly modify files under /System and leaves System Integrity Protection (SIP) enabled. It is independent third-party software, not an Apple utility or an Apple-endorsed tool. The project repository documents its behavior and compatibility.
As documented on the repository page reviewed October 7, 2026, the requirements are an Apple silicon Mac and macOS 27. macOS 26 and earlier are listed as unsupported; for macOS 27.0.1, the project says to use version 0.2.3 or later. Compatibility can change, so check the README and release notes for your macOS version before proceeding.
Will it really reclaim 12 GB?
MacRumors reported an estimate of roughly 12 GB, with the amount depending on the models present. Ars Technica also reported the developer’s estimate of about 12 GB and cited reports of model storage exceeding 30 GB. The larger figure is a reported possibility, not a typical result or a promise. Neither figure is a universal measurement for every Mac, and neither is an Apple-published storage statistic for RemoveMacAI. MacRumors’ report and Ars Technica’s report describe estimates and user reports rather than a guaranteed outcome.

Check your own Mac before deciding: open System Settings → General → Storage, then select the information button beside macOS, as described by MacRumors. After RemoveMacAI releases the models through Apple’s asset service, macOS may not delete the files immediately. The project warns that Storage settings can continue counting them until the operating system removes them on its own schedule.
What you lose when Apple Intelligence models are removed
Disabling the features and removing their models is broader than simply hiding a button. The project lists these affected features:

Dictation remains available: its speech models are separate and are not removed, according to the project. Features that require Apple Intelligence models may become available again if macOS downloads the models after you turn those features back on.
How to use the tool cautiously
The project documents commands for checking feature status and model sizes, previewing changes with a dry run, disabling features while keeping named features enabled, and reverting its changes. Model sizes the asset service cannot report may appear as “unknown.” Since command syntax and compatibility can change, use the commands and installation steps in the current README rather than relying on instructions copied from an older release.

- Confirm compatibility: Check the repository’s current requirements and release notes against your Mac’s chip and macOS version.
- Check current storage: In System Settings, open General → Storage and inspect the macOS entry so you have a baseline.
- Inspect before changing anything: Use the project’s documented status and dry-run options to see which features and models it identifies. Read the proposed changes before proceeding.
- Apply only the change you want: Follow the README’s current command syntax. If you want to preserve particular features, use the documented option for keeping named features enabled and verify exactly what it will leave active.
- Allow time for storage to update: The asset service can release models before macOS removes the corresponding files, so the Storage display may lag.
Reverting the changes and understanding the risks
The project documents removemacai revert as its undo command. It says removing the profile restores the previous settings and macOS can download models again when a feature needs them. Treat this as the project’s documented recovery path, not a guarantee covering every future macOS release.
Keeping SIP enabled is a useful safeguard, but it does not establish that a third-party utility is risk-free or independently security-audited. There is also a compatibility caveat beyond the tool’s stated version list: MacRumors reported that Apple deprecated configuration-profile restriction keys used by the tool in macOS 26.4, while they still worked in macOS 27.0.1 at the time of its report. Future macOS updates could change that behavior.

RemoveMacAI is not the archived apple-intelligence-remover repository. GitHub marks that earlier project archived on August 21, 2026. Its README describes direct deletion attempts against known asset and cache paths, possible SIP or permission failures, and no automatic restoration. RemoveMacAI instead says it works through Apple’s asset service and provides a documented revert command. The archived project’s repository describes its distinct approach.
