Claude Code gives you useful ways to inspect session and context usage, but no single screen identifies every cause of a usage spike. Start by checking whether your session is covered by a Claude subscription or billed through an API key, then compare the right usage view with the right account-level report.
First, identify how your Claude Code session is metered
Claude subscription usage and API usage are different. A subscription seat draws on the plan’s included usage and limits. When Claude Code uses an API key, requests are billed per token to the associated Anthropic Console account. Requests routed through a supported cloud provider are reported by that provider. Anthropic explains these distinctions in its Models, usage, and limits in Claude Code guide.
If you use more than one sign-in or provider route, confirm which account and authentication method the session uses before comparing numbers. A plan-usage view and an API bill do not measure the same thing.
Use the command that answers your question

These views answer related but distinct questions: /context shows what is loaded now, while /usage helps with plan and session usage. Neither should be treated as a complete explanation of every request or a billing statement.
Read token counts as categories, not one interchangeable total
For API billing, input tokens, output tokens, cache-write tokens, and cache-read tokens can have different rates. The applicable prices also depend on the model. Anthropic’s API pricing documentation separates these categories, so a large token count does not by itself tell you which part drove the cost. Compare each category with the rate for the model and account route you actually used.

Claude Code’s session dollar figure is locally calculated and is an estimate. For Anthropic API billing, use the Claude Console Usage page; if traffic went through Bedrock, Vertex, or another supported provider, consult that provider’s billing reports instead. Anthropic describes Console reporting in its usage and cost reporting guide.
Check whether context and prompt caching are involved
A conversation with substantial history can mean more input context is sent across requests. The /context view helps you see what is loaded at the moment, but it does not establish what each request cost or whether caching applied.

Anthropic’s CLAUDE.md guidance says prompt caching can make repeated context cheaper: the first request pays full input pricing, and later requests within roughly five minutes can use the lower cache-read rate. Treat that interval as documented guidance, not a guarantee for every model, account, or request. Check the current pricing and account behavior when reconciling a bill.
Reconcile estimates against account reporting
For an API-key session, use /cost as a useful running session estimate, then compare it with the authoritative usage report for the account that received the requests. Anthropic’s Console guide provides visual reporting for input and output tokens and charts for rate limits and caching. Cloud-provider-routed requests belong in the relevant provider’s reporting view, rather than being assumed to appear as Anthropic Console API charges.

Reduce loaded history with a controlled change
If older conversation history is no longer needed, use /clear to start a fresh conversation. If you need to continue the task but can do so with summarized history, use /compact to free context by summarizing it. Both commands are listed in Anthropic’s Claude Code usage guide.
To learn what helps in your own workflow, note the current usage, make one change, and compare the next session. The amount saved depends on what the session loads and how it is used; these commands do not guarantee a particular reduction.
