All of Us follows Ruby Bridges Elementary in Washington State, where children with different disabilities and support needs learn in the same classroom. In the film’s story, iPads running augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) software help some students express themselves—and, educators say, can be useful to classmates beyond those with communication challenges. The reporting does not identify the iPad model or AAC app, and it does not establish a measured academic effect.
What is the All of Us documentary about?
All of Us is a 2026 documentary about Ruby Bridges Elementary, a Washington State public school that opened in 2020. Apple TV’s synopsis describes a school where children learn together regardless of disability or support needs, and characterizes the school’s academic and social outcomes as strong. That is the platform’s description, not an independent evaluation or a quantified finding that the school model caused particular results. Apple TV’s US listing gives the film a 70-minute runtime, a G rating, and credits Marco Niemeijer as writer and director. It lists the United States and Netherlands as regions of origin and copyright © 2025 Niemeijer M&F.
The US listing specifies English original audio and English closed captions, with Dutch, French, and Latin American Spanish subtitles. Apple TV catalogs and availability can differ by market; check the listing for your country rather than assuming the US language or availability details apply everywhere.
How does Ruby Bridges Elementary include students with disabilities?
The school’s approach, as summarized by Apple TV, is to teach children with different abilities and support needs in the same classroom rather than separating them by disability. The documentary presents this as a shared learning environment, with communication access as one practical part of participation. The cited coverage does not provide an independent study, enrollment or staffing data, or outcome measurements for the school, so it cannot establish how broadly the approach works or quantify its effects.

How do iPads help students who use AAC?
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) includes tools people use to communicate when speech alone is not sufficient or accessible. In the film’s classroom, students use iPads running AAC software to communicate with teachers and peers, according to Ben Lovejoy’s October 5, 2026 report for 9to5Mac. The report does not name the software, specify an iPad generation, or say how the school acquired or manages the devices.
Founding principal Cathi Davis told 9to5Mac: “All learners, including learners with advanced reading and language skills, or our learners at the start of our communication or language journey, show high levels of engagement when they can use the AAC tool to generate, expand or express ideas through AAC.” She also said: “It is truly the epitome of what we mean when we say ‘universal design,’ and it is very much a tool for all as compared to almost every other attempt we make at tools for language, communication and vocabulary in the classroom.” These are Davis’s accounts of classroom experience, not independent measurements or a conclusion about every student or school.

What the school example does—and does not—show
The reported example is useful because it frames AAC as a communication resource that may support participation beyond the students who rely on it most. It should not be read as proof that a particular device or app improves outcomes universally. The cited sources do not identify a specific AAC product, provide an effect size, or report an independent evaluation of Ruby Bridges Elementary.
Apple’s Reaching all learners with iPad guide describes broader accessibility options, including Live Speech, Assistive Access, Spoken Content, VoiceOver, Switch Control, and Guided Access. The guide is general Apple product information; it does not establish that Ruby Bridges Elementary used those particular features. Availability and compatibility depend on the device, software version, and language.

What to consider when choosing an iPad setup for AAC
The documentary does not supply a product recommendation. For a school or family evaluating a tablet for communication, the useful questions are about fit and support rather than an assumed best model:
- AAC app compatibility: Confirm the app’s supported devices and operating-system requirements before selecting hardware.
- Access method: Consider whether the learner can use touch, voice, an external switch, or another supported access method.
- Accessibility needs: Check required features and language support against Apple’s current compatibility information and the AAC app’s requirements.
- School policies: Account for device management, privacy, and any restrictions on apps or accounts.
- Durability and support: Consider protection, repair options, and who will help maintain the device and communication setup.
- Total cost: Include the tablet, any AAC app or accessories, protection, and ongoing support; the film’s reporting does not disclose the school’s purchasing arrangement.
Apple’s ConnectED webpage describes workshops and ongoing educator support for that program, but it does not establish that the same services are available to every school. Apple also reports 4,400+ teachers using iPad and 55,000+ students learning with iPad in Apple ConnectED schools; the page does not state the figures’ year. They describe the ConnectED program, not Ruby Bridges Elementary.

Where educators can find more information
According to 9to5Mac, the documentary’s website offers video resources for schools interested in the example. Apple’s accessibility guide can help readers understand feature categories, but device and language support should be checked against current requirements before planning a setup.
