Google briefly showed a WhatsApp button in Local Results, according to a report by Search Engine Watch’s Sachin Patel on October 5, 2026. Patel said it had disappeared by his next-day check and that he could not verify what happened when it was clicked. The observation is not evidence of a confirmed or widespread launch.
What was observed—and what remains unknown
Patel reported seeing the button in Google Local Results, then no longer seeing it a day later. He tested in Incognito mode and said he was unable to confirm its behavior. He assumed that clicking it would let a customer start a WhatsApp conversation with the business, but that was not a tested result. Search Engine Watch’s October 5 report does not establish the market, device, query, listing, or account conditions involved.
That makes this a short-lived report from one observer, not confirmation of a Google rollout. The button’s scope, destination, and relationship to Google’s existing Business Profile chat setting are unknown.
How the reported button differs from Google’s documented chat option
Google separately documents a WhatsApp or text messaging option for claimed and verified Business Profiles in select regions. Its help page explains how an owner can add a contact method; it does not confirm that this setting produced the button Patel saw in Local Results. Google’s Business Profile chat instructions describe the documented feature, not the October observation.

WhatsApp’s help page describes the general path for a business adding a WhatsApp Business number to its Google Business Profile so customers can open a chat. That explains the documented setup’s mechanics, but does not verify the October button’s destination. WhatsApp’s Google Business Profile instructions cover that general flow.

- Open the Business Profile and select Edit profile.
- Open Contact, then find Chat.
- Select WhatsApp and enter the business’s click-to-chat URL. Google’s instructions also describe adding a text-message option using a number that can receive texts.
- Save the change, then check the profile’s contact details to confirm the intended option is present.
Google says that when both WhatsApp and text messaging are set up, only the text-message option appears to customers. The exact settings available depend on whether the feature is offered in the business’s region.

Search Engine Roundtable reported in June 2026 that some business owners found WhatsApp numbers on their profiles that they had not added; reported examples included landline numbers that could not receive WhatsApp messages. The outlet also reported that users later said they could delete the numbers. These are individual reports, not evidence that all Business Profiles were affected. Search Engine Roundtable’s June 11 coverage is a reason to check your own listing, not to assume your profile was changed.

- Review the profile’s Edit profile > Contact > Chat settings.
- Confirm that any WhatsApp link or number belongs to the business and reaches an account the business can access.
- If the contact method is incorrect or unwanted, remove or update it in the profile settings and verify the change on the listing.
