Apple Books is getting five reading-view interface changes in iOS 27.2 beta 3, according to 9to5Mac’s October 6, 2026 report. They adjust reading progress and the placement and appearance of key controls. The timing overlaps with the approaching iPhone Duo launch, but Apple says that phone will run iOS 27.1 at availability—not iOS 27.2.
What changed in Apple Books in iOS 27.2 beta 3?
9to5Mac reports that the beta makes five changes to Apple Books’ reading view. These are observations from a beta, not a final-release feature list, so the interface could still change before iOS 27.2 ships.
- Reading progress bars: Readers can use bars to track their location in a book.
- A redesigned lower-right menu: The menu now has a three-dot icon and a revised Liquid Glass appearance.
- A separate bookmark button: Bookmarking is removed from the menu and placed in a standalone button at the upper-right.
- A relocated close button: The “X” moves to the upper-left.
- A relocated, larger back button: The back control moves to the lower-left and is larger than before.
The changes reorganize controls around the reading screen rather than introducing a new Books service or a confirmed device-specific feature. 9to5Mac’s favorable reaction is the reporter’s personal impression, not a measured usability finding.
Will iPhone Duo launch with the new Apple Books design?
That is not confirmed. Apple Developer’s September 16, 2026 note says iPhone Duo will be available on October 23 and “will run iOS 27.1.” The Books redesign, by contrast, has been reported in iOS 27.2 beta 3. The available announcements do not establish that iOS 27.2—or these Books changes—will be on iPhone Duo at launch.

Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9, with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Preorders are scheduled to begin October 16, with availability on October 23. A larger foldable screen may make reading an interesting use case, but the screen specifications alone do not establish a Books-specific optimization.
What does the iPhone Duo Folio add for reading?
Apple separately announced an iPhone Duo Folio with an integrated kickstand that supports adjustable angles for reading, viewing content, or FaceTime. Apple says it will be available to order October 16 for US$129. That makes it an optional accessory with a reading-related use; Apple’s description does not say it is required to use Apple Books.

Because the interface details come from beta 3 reporting, readers should treat them as provisional until Apple ships iOS 27.2 and the Books controls can be checked in that release. For iPhone Duo, the key distinction is the operating-system version Apple has stated for launch: iOS 27.1. Any later confirmation that the new Books design reaches the phone would need to come from a subsequent release or Apple announcement.
