Google does not have one hidden data switch. Different Google Account settings can save different kinds of activity, and turning off one control does not necessarily delete data saved by another. To review what may be stored, check My Activity, Web & App Activity, Search services history if available, Timeline, browser history, and ad settings separately.
What “Google’s hidden data layer” means
It is a useful metaphor for activity and related information saved across separate Google Account controls—not a single secret database or universal setting. What is saved depends on the account, the controls enabled, the products used, and, in some cases, settings managed by a work or school administrator.
Google’s Web & App Activity help page says saved activity may include Search and Maps activity; details such as language, referrer, browser or app, and device type; ad clicks and some purchases; and Assistant interactions. It also says: “Activity may also include info about your location from your device’s general area and IP address.” An additional option can include activity from sites, apps, Chrome, and Android that use Google services.
Which controls cover which information?
| Control | What to review | What its action does not necessarily cover |
|---|---|---|
| Web & App Activity | Saved activity associated with Google services, with additional inclusion options for some site, app, Chrome, and Android activity. Check whether voice and audio activity is included. | It is separate from Timeline and browser-local history. Turning it off does not by itself delete records saved under other controls. |
| Search services history | Where available, activity across services such as Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. | It is distinct from Timeline and browser history. Google is gradually rolling out this setting, so some accounts may still use Web & App Activity to control Search history. |
| Timeline | Location-related records managed through Google Account or Maps controls. | Pausing or deleting Timeline does not necessarily affect location information saved through Web & App Activity or Search services history. |
| Browser history and cookies | Browsing records and cookies stored by Chrome or another browser on a device. | Google Account activity controls do not replace the browser’s own deletion controls. |
| Ad settings | Information and personalization choices used for ads. | These choices are separate from deleting activity in My Activity or changing Timeline. |
| Download Your Data | A downloadable copy of supported account content. | Export is not deletion; use My Activity and the relevant product controls to review or remove saved records. |
Google Account Help explains these separate controls and notes that Search services history is rolling out gradually: Google Account data and privacy controls. Google’s Location policy also distinguishes Timeline from location-related information in other histories.

How to review and manage the data
- Open your Google Account privacy controls. Review the current activity settings and inspect Web & App Activity, including its site, app, Chrome, Android, and voice or audio options where shown. Labels and available choices can vary by account.
- Review saved activity in My Activity. Look through the records and delete activity you do not want retained. If you want to stop future Web & App Activity saving, read the options carefully: “Turn off” and “Turn off and delete activity” are different choices.
- Check Timeline separately. Use the Google Account or Maps controls to review Timeline, its deletion options, and any auto-delete setting. Pausing future saving is not the same as removing records already saved.
- Look for Search services history. If the setting appears in your account, review and manage it separately. Because the rollout is gradual, your account may instead show the older Web & App Activity control for Search history.
- Clear browser data where needed. Delete history and cookies in each browser and on each device you want to clear; account-level controls do not do this for you.
- Review ad settings and export options. Use ad settings to manage information used for ads. Use Download Your Data if you want a copy of supported account content; an export does not remove the original data.
Google’s Safety Center privacy controls describes My Activity, the account Dashboard, and Download Your Data.
Location data: why Timeline is not the whole picture
Google’s location policy says that Search services history and Web & App Activity can include a general area derived from a device or IP address. For that specified location metadata in those histories, Google says it is automatically deleted after 30 days. This is not a blanket deletion period for every location record or Google product.

The same policy distinguishes the controls: turning off Timeline does not change location handling through other histories, and turning off those other histories does not turn off Timeline. If your goal is to remove saved location-related information, inspect each applicable control rather than assuming one setting covers all of it.
Google says Location History is off by default and Web & App Activity auto-delete defaults to 18 months for new accounts, as described by its Safety Center. These are stated defaults for new accounts, not confirmation of your account’s current settings. Check your own controls.

What turning a setting off does—and does not do
Turning a control off generally addresses future saving under that control. Deleting existing records is a separate action, and Google provides a distinct “Turn off and delete activity” choice for Web & App Activity. Data held in another history, in a browser, or under another product control may require a separate action.
Keeping activity histories can support access to past activity and personalization; limiting or deleting them reduces what remains available in those histories. The exact effect depends on the control and record type. Avoid treating a pause as proof that all previously saved information has been erased.

Historical context
A 2022 Kentucky multistate settlement document discussed historical allegations that Google’s interfaces and disclosures did not make clear enough that Web & App Activity could save location information. That document is historical context about the period it addressed, not a description of every account’s present interface or settings. Google’s current help and policy pages describe the controls and distinctions users should check today.
