Nextcloud and ownCloud are documented options. Whether the change feels worth it depends on how you use Drive, especially on mobile, for collaboration, and for sharing with people outside your account.
What “self-hosted” means in practice
With a self-hosted file service, your files live on a server you operate or arrange through hosting, rather than solely in a provider’s cloud. You use client apps to sync files between that server and your computers or phones. The arrangement offers control over where the service runs and how it is managed, but it also makes server availability, updates, backups, access, and recovery part of the setup.
Self-hosting does not, by itself, establish that your files are safer or more private than they were in Google Drive. That depends on the server, its configuration, who can access it, and how it is maintained.
Which platforms are realistic candidates?
Nextcloud
Nextcloud documents desktop sync clients for Windows, macOS, and Linux, plus Android and iOS clients. Its desktop workflow uses a local synced folder: copy files there and changes synchronize across devices. The Nextcloud User Manual’s desktop and mobile synchronization guide notes that Android bidirectional synchronization is not fully implemented. If your phone needs to both upload and download changes automatically, check the current Android client documentation and test your workflow before relying on it; client capabilities can change.

- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
ownCloud
ownCloud’s official guide describes it as a self-hosted file-sync and sharing solution, with desktop and mobile clients that synchronize local shared directories with the server. That makes it another candidate to investigate, not proof that every feature or behavior matches Nextcloud or Google Drive.
Check your Drive workflow before switching
Start by listing what you actually rely on in Drive. A replacement should be judged against those tasks, not simply by whether it can store files.

- Computer sync: Confirm that the platform has a client for each operating system you use and that its local-folder behavior suits your habits.
- Phone behavior: Check whether you need automatic uploads, two-way synchronization, or reliable access when offline. In particular, validate the Android behavior described in the current Nextcloud documentation if you are considering it.
- Sharing: Identify whether you share links, invite named users, or collaborate with people who do not use your server.
- Collaboration: Separate file storage and sharing from any document editing or other collaborative work you expect to keep. Do not assume that a self-hosted platform reproduces every Drive feature or workflow without configuration.
- Administration: Decide who will handle the server, upgrades, access controls, backups, and recovery— you or a hosting provider.
- Security requirements: Decide whether protection on the server’s storage is sufficient or whether files need encryption before they reach the server.
Sharing is supported, but the workflow may differ
Nextcloud documents file sharing and federation. Its sharing documentation describes direct sharing with users on other Nextcloud, ownCloud, or Pydio servers, alongside broader collaboration capabilities. See the Nextcloud sharing page for the platform’s description.
Federation is useful when people on separate compatible servers need to share, but it is not a guarantee that every external-recipient, permission, or collaboration workflow works just like Google Drive. Before moving shared work, test the exact tasks that matter: who can open a share, what they can change, and whether the tools they need are available to them.

Understand the encryption boundary
Encryption terminology matters. The Nextcloud administration manual describes its server-side encryption as protection for files on remote storage, but explicitly distinguishes it from client-side encryption: the feature does not provide client-side encryption. It should not be described as end-to-end encryption. Read the Nextcloud encryption configuration documentation to understand its scope and key-management requirements.
The same documentation advises regular backups of encryption keys because losing them can cause permanent data loss. If a threat model requires that the server operator cannot read file contents, server-side encryption alone does not meet that requirement; investigate a client-side encryption approach and its implications for search, previews, sharing, and recovery before choosing.

Who should make the switch?
A self-hosted cloud may fit if…
- You want to choose or control the environment where your file service runs.
- You are comfortable arranging ongoing server administration, or have a hosting arrangement that clearly covers it.
- Your sync, sharing, and collaboration needs have been checked against the platform’s actual clients and features.
Google Drive may remain simpler if…
- You depend on a specific Drive collaboration workflow and have not verified an equivalent.
- You need predictable mobile behavior that a candidate client does not yet support fully.
- You do not want responsibility for arranging maintenance, backups, and recovery.
Neither list makes one option universally better. The practical decision is whether the control you gain is worth the extra operational work for your particular workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan the move around proof, not assumptions
Do not treat a platform’s feature list as evidence that your migration will preserve everything you use. Before moving your main files, set up a small trial and verify that representative folders sync on your devices, that external sharing works as expected, and that your collaborators can complete their tasks. Confirm who is responsible for upgrades, backup copies, and restoring files if the server or account becomes unavailable. The platform documentation cited here does not establish a migration procedure from Google Drive, a required hardware configuration, or a particular hosting setup; those depend on the service and environment you choose.
