You can watch live TV on a smart TV through a cable connection, an antenna, or compatible streaming apps. The right option depends on which channels you want, what your TV supports, and whether those channels and services are available where you live.
How can I watch live TV on my smart TV?
Choose the route that carries the channels you want:
- Cable: Connect your provider’s equipment to the TV, then select its input. If your provider offers an app that works with your TV, you may be able to watch through that instead.
- Antenna: Connect an appropriate antenna to a TV with a digital tuner, then scan for over-the-air channels using the TV’s instructions.
- Live-TV apps: Connect the TV to the internet and install a compatible app, or use live channels built into your TV platform if available.
A smart TV does not automatically include a cable subscription, guarantee antenna reception, or provide every live-TV app. Check the TV’s capabilities and the channels or service lineup before buying equipment or subscribing.
Watch through cable service
For cable, connect the cable box to a compatible TV input and select that input. The exact setup and input label depend on your TV and provider, so use the instructions for your particular equipment. Some providers also offer TV apps; availability depends on the provider, TV platform, and region.

Some Google TV devices can show cable service through the TV app in Basic Mode, but Google notes that features depend on the device. This does not mean that every smart TV has the same cable setup or that the TV replaces the provider’s service. Google’s Google TV help page describes the platform’s live-TV options.
Get local channels with an antenna
Over-the-air reception can provide local broadcast channels without a cable subscription, but the stations you can receive depend on your address and antenna setup. The FCC says the appropriate antenna may be indoor or rooftop depending on location. Check reception for your address before buying; no antenna can be assumed to receive a particular station everywhere. The FCC’s consumer guidance explains the equipment basics.

Check the TV’s tuner and connection
A modern digital TV with a tuner can receive digital broadcasts when connected to an appropriate antenna. If your TV is analog-only, FCC guidance says you need a digital-to-analog converter box to receive digital over-the-air signals. Its guidance is from 2010; a converter is not ordinarily needed for a modern digital TV.
Choose indoor or rooftop reception based on location
The FCC’s guidance is explicit: “Depending on your location, this could be either an outdoor rooftop antenna or an indoor antenna.” An indoor TV antenna may suit some homes, while reception conditions or installation needs may call for a rooftop antenna. Check local signal availability first, then choose the antenna type; the FCC guidance does not establish a best brand, model, range, or performance ranking.

Use live-TV apps and built-in channels
Streaming apps deliver live channels over the internet, but app support and channel availability vary by TV platform and region. Check that your TV supports the app you want and that the service offers the channels in your area.
Google TV’s free and paid options
Google’s US help page describes Google TV Freeplay as offering live channels at no charge without installing an app, signing up, or subscribing; it requires current Google TV software. Google names Xumo and Scripps as content providers. This is a Google TV offering described for the US, not a promise that Freeplay is available in every country or on every smart-TV platform. Google also says Live-tab content varies by country and partner integration. See Google’s Freeplay and live-TV information.

YouTube TV, Sling TV, and Philo are listed as paid subscription options that viewers can add to Google TV. Confirm current local availability, channels, and price directly with the service before subscribing; Google’s page is not a current price or comprehensive lineup comparison.
When to consider a separate streaming device
If your TV does not support a live-TV app you want, a compatible external streaming device may be an option. Google says its Google TV Streamer (4K) connects over HDMI and supports services including live TV. It is not automatically necessary: first check whether the desired app already works on your TV. Google’s product page has device details.

Compare the three ways to watch
| Option | What you need | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Cable service | Provider service and compatible cable equipment or app | Correct TV input or app support, and whether the desired channels are in your provider’s lineup |
| Antenna | Appropriate antenna and a TV with a digital tuner; an analog-only TV needs a converter for digital broadcasts under FCC guidance | Address-specific reception, available stations, and whether indoor or rooftop installation suits your location |
| Live-TV apps | Internet-connected TV experience and compatible apps, unless channels are integrated into the platform | Platform and regional availability, channel lineup, and current subscription price if paid |
There is no universal channel lineup across these choices. Make a list of the local stations, news, sports, and other channels you care about, then check whether the specific antenna reception area or service lineup includes them. Antenna signals vary by location; app catalogs and platform integrations can also be geographically limited.
Can I get local channels without cable?
Often, an antenna is a way to receive local broadcast stations without cable, but reception depends on your location and equipment. Some live-TV apps may also include local channels, but availability varies by service and area. Check the exact stations you want before choosing either route.
Do I need an antenna for live TV?
No. An antenna is needed for over-the-air broadcasts, not for cable service or internet-delivered live-TV apps. If you choose antenna reception, make sure the TV has a digital tuner and verify reception for your address before selecting indoor or rooftop equipment.
